EON

[EVE Online] CCP e-mailed me today to announce the upcoming publication of EON, “possibly the most exciting development in the MMORPG world since EVE itself.” Only eight months in the making! So what is EON? A magazine about EVE: Online, just $15/issue. (Since it will be a quarterly publication, that is not more than the cost of the game itself. I was concerned.)

I have so many different ways that I want to comment on this, I cannot decide which to go with. Obviously, I have been swept away by “possibly the most exciting development in the MMORPG world since EVE itself.” Maybe we can make a week of EON on KTR.

Wacky Cross Promotion

[World of Warcraft] Some things just do not make sense when put together. For instance, what the heck is up with this cross promotion?

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy presents the World of Warcraft Wanted Poster Contest. Prizes are from Apple. That’s just really odd. Don’t you think?

Corrupted Blood

[World of Warcraft] Word was running rampant through the streets, the plague was here! People were falling dead everywhere and nobody could stop it. Finally, a live event from Blizzard. What a treat!

Oh wait, never mind:

Beginning at 4:00 AM PDT on 9/17 we will be issuing rolling restarts to all realms to apply a hotfix. We expect this to resolve several issues:

Hakkar’s spell Corrupted Blood can no longer exist outside of Zul’Gurub

Turns out Hunter pets would get infected in ZG and they would dismiss them only to resummon in town. Personally, I think this was cool.

Bah.

Update: It appears that the hotfix remedy concocted to combat the recent Azerothian outbreak has not yielded desired results. At this time, our medical staff is continuing to develop an effective cure. We look forward to ensuring the health and vitality of the citizens of Azeroth in the near future.

Ding IRL

The civil service is a great place for gamers. Sure, there is a bit of a grind, but it’s a level-based system with clear rewards for time inputs. Having reached level 12 this week, in addition to the bonus in gold rewards, I get six skill points and a feat to assign on my stats. It should take about a year to level again, so I have time to shop around and decide where to spend those. You don’t want to be FOTM in government.

Unfortunately, lag was an issue, since I messaged the trainer four months ago. It apparently takes many requests to the server for that to go through. I wonder if they’re getting a lot of those requests lately? It all ends happily, since there was a rollback and the gold rewards are retroactive to when they were originally scheduled for implementation.

Next, we beat another metaphor into the ground for no good reason. But first, I need to go wash some dishes in a kind of The Sims LARP.

HUZZAH Federation at war with The Short Bus Squad

[EVE Online] Huzzah Federation allience has declared war on The Short Bus Squad, a known pirate corp in the .1-.4 systems in the Providence region. It’s time for us to put the “windowlickers” in their place :)

FFXI Expansion announced at TGS

[Final Fantasy XI] Square Enix annouced the new Final Fantasy XI expansion at the Tokyo Game Show yesterday. Treasures of Aht Urghan is the title (which was guessed long ago when a trademark search was done on SE and it was the only title that didn’t already have some already known information) and it looks fantastic! Sorry, went a little fanboi there for a sec.

SE’s official announcement:

Images from the new FINAL FANTASY XI expansion, “Treasures of Aht Urhgan,” have finally been released to the public at the Tokyo Game Show (September 16-18)! And soon, players will be able to view a sneak peek of the new content from this site!

This page will continuously be updated with the most up-to-date information on exciting new content from “Treasures of Aht Urhgan,” so keep your eyes peeled for more!

The most intriguing thing is that in the video I have seen, there is obviously a new job that follows the classic Final Fantasy Blue Mage character.

I have an itch

Well, after reading Zxyrox’s last post about EVE Online, I got an incredible itch to play a space combat game. One of my earliest adventures into online gaming was a game called Dark Space. It’s a p2p space combat strategy game. After downloading the 501MB EVE Online client and realizing that I had to buy an account to get the free trial (I should have known, I feel so stupid), I decided to try out my old addiction, Dark Space.

Dark Space is free to download and you can make a demo account which allows you access to some newbie games but severely limits you to what ranks you can obtain and other such things. However, it has been about four years since I’ve last played the game. The game hasn’t really changed much it doesn’t seem, at least in terms of look and gameplay. The only change that really irked me was that they added some music, which is nice, but I used to love traveling through space with the sound of nothing but some weird radio signals. Now it’s like I’m listening to the Halo soundtrack or something. What’s this? My stealth bomber has a CD player? Yes, in the future we still use CDs.

The most disappointing thing, however, is that the demo community seems to be pretty dead and it’s not even close to a game I would spend $10 on every month. The only populated demo server is a map that takes place in the whole universe, which means it takes about 7 minutes just to jump to a portion of space that has any action going on in it, and being a demo with only access to low rank ships, it sucks to take 7 minutes to jump and then about 10 seconds to die.

Yep, I doubt I’ll be playing Dark Space much unless another map gets put up. Way to scratch my itch Dark Space. You can find Dark Space here, but don’t count on the demo really making you want to play it.
