A Forest of Holy Trees

Since I already have one topic going about the changes to the most popular healers in WoW today, I thought I’d take a different angle to it – i.e. fix instead of nerf. The main reason Paladins (and Shammies and Druids to a lesser, more specific extent) are the main healers is they simply have a better healing tree. So I’m going to try my very amateur hand at redesigning the Holy and Disc trees. This will be a bumpy ride. More after the cut.

As part of my redesign, I’m making the following assumptions:

1. Holy is the healing tree. If it helps you heal, it will be in here.
2. Disc is your enhancement tree. It makes you better at what you do.
3. Shadow is your DPS tree. I’m not planning on adding to this, but I will take some away. These talents focus, with the Vampire set, on just doing damage. I like where the Vampire set is now – its like you’ve learned enough how to hurt people that you can heal as well…

————-
Holy

Tier 1 (no pre-req)

Healing Focus, Improved Renew, Holy Spec – Leaving these as is.

Tier 2 (5 points in tree to unlock)

Meditation (moved from Disc Tree), Divine Brilliance (3 tiered version of the Pally innate ‘Inspiration’, giving 25/50/75% return on crit heal).

Tier 3 (10 points in tree to unlock)

Holy Nova, Inspiration – As currently in game. Other talent here moved.

Tier 4 (15 points to unlock)

Holy Reach (modified to affect all Holy, which it only excepted Renew which is silly), Improved Healing, Mental Agility (from Disc tree). Other talent moved.

Tier 5 (20 points to unlock)

Healing Prayers, Spiritual Guidance, Divine Spirit (from Disc tree)

Tier 6 (25 points to unlock)

Spiritual Healing (as current), Surge of Light (lame, but not coming up with another option as a dps gimmick for healers)

Tier 7 (30 points to unlock)

Holy Concentration, Empowered Healing (changed to affect all heals)

Tier 8 (35 points to unlock)

Circle of Healing (made 25% stronger. The current buff to it on PTR is 1%. It’s too weak)

Tier 9 (40 points to unlock)

Divine Resuscitation – 5 sec cast in-combat rez. Target returns at 50% health/mana. 60 min recast.

Discipline

Tier 1 (no pre-req)

Unbreakable Will, Wand Spec, Silent Resolve (moved down a level) – Leaving these as is.

Tier 2 (5 points in tree to unlock)

Martyrdom, Improved Power Word: Shield (add another 10% boost to this, scales poorly), Improved Power Word: Fortitude, Spell Warding (from Holy), Divine Fury (from Holy)

Tier 3 (10 points in tree to unlock)

Improved Psychic Scream (from shadow), Absolution, Inner Focus

Tier 4 (15 points to unlock)

Improved Inner Fire (doubled effect), Improved Mana Burn, Improved Divine Spirit, Blessed Recovery (from Holy), Improved Fade (from Shadow), Searing Light (from Holy)

Tier 5 (20 points to unlock)

Silence (from shadow, requirement removed), Mental Strength, Focused Power (double effect)

Tier 6 (25 points to unlock)

Resilience of the Shadow (formerly Shadow resilience), Resilience of the Devout (formerly Blessed Resilience), Force of Will

Tier 7 (30 points to unlock)

Power Infusion, Reflective Shield,

Tier 8 (35 points to unlock)

Enlightenment, Pain Suppression

Tier 9 (40 points to unlock)

Incarnation – In-combat resurrection. This restores the dead player at full mana/health with a debuff that reduces their healing received by 50%, and causes them to go to 1hp after 30 seconds. 5 sec cast, 60 min refresh. (Basically this says you get a cool rez because you worked this hard, but since Holy is the best healer, there is a drawback. Needs more refining, I think.)

Changes to shadow tree: Moved Improved Psychic Scream, Silence, Shadow Resilience, and Improved Fade to Disc tree.

These changes cause Holy to have the useful aspects for a healer, Disc to have items to enhance your skills (and note: the assumption is you’ll have 41 holy, so need 20 disc..there’s useful stuff at 20 points too, like every other tree in the game), and Shadow to DPS. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than it is today.

  1. I’ve seen a lot of alternative trees… and yours is good :)

In particular for you give a tree that allows the priests to heal not only in the beginning but also in the end ^^

  2. I’m not sure about putting the priest equivalent (and better, at this point) of Paladin Inspiration at tier 2. Even in the “good” old days, it was the 11 point talent in the Holy tree for Paladins.

Question: where would you see paladins fitting in after this change? Priests, with these changes, could do everything a paladin could do, but better (except take damage). Warriors and then druids are the typically preferred tanks, and nobody really wants retribution paladins around for DPS. In the new scheme, paladins can tank well enough in a pinch, and they can heal well enough in a pinch, but if there’s better choices, why even bring them along on the raids? Or is the plan for them to go back to the buffbot/cleansebot role? Sure, they’ll be able to get along fine in five mans, maybe even heroic five mans, but since the best loot, for whatever reason, is always going to be in raids, that’s not much of a comfort.

Of course, this leads into my usual, “Raids are stupid and an abomination of gameplay and story” rant, so I’ll leave off with just the question. :)

  3. Oh, yeah, one other thing. On Improved PW:S, why not make it scale with a percentage of either spirit or +damage/+healing? That seems like a way to make it very useable in the end game.

  4. Looks good to me. I especially like the battle rez idea. It always pisses me off when I am running an instance with my friend-feral druid- and he is the one I have to yell to for a rez when the tank overpulls and wipes the rogue.

    Druid: ennervate/battle rez

    Priest: Lightwell/Circle of Healing

    Something seriously wrong here.
