Da Most Int’restin Sellin’ Place in the Woild

For last night’s adventure, I decided to take a trip the the university and then the black market. As my little Mastermind was but 7th, this was an interesting trip. Still, I survived and made it to CoV’s auction house, which should really be called cBay (with the good guy version called hBay, of course). Silly copyright restrictions.

Ex-Sigil Interview

I don’t normally post just a link to another site, but I think this ex-Sigil employee interview at F13 is too important not to send people to it.

Some highlights:

Ex-Sigil: QA was one person up until about November… ONE.

Ex-Sigil: Well, worst of all.. at the end of Sigil, Brad wasn’t even there to look us in the eye and apologize.

Go there now.

Hey Youse Guys

After taking Zubon up on his offer for the trial run on CoH/CoV and reactivating my old account there, I decided I would give the dark side a try. With only 10 days to play with, and my limited play time, I probably should have waited for my upcoming mini vacation, but I wasn’t thinking clearly.

After going through assorted hurdles to log in (i.e. I forgot my password and login), I created my first Villian. I was disappointed but not entirely surprised to see they mostly sounded similar to the archetypes on the Hero side. However, I saw one that interested me, that was different from anything I’d played in CoH before - the Mastermind. After ensuring I had my pinky finger properly placed at the edge of my mouth, I began playing with the still-unmatched character creation screens.

Gamer’s Day

My family took my Mom out for dinner on Mother’s Day. My Mom, my wife and our kids, my brother, my older sister and her kids and my younger sister with her son all gathered to celebrate motherhood in the best way possible - eating food and not making Mom cook or do dishes afterwards.

We met at a nice steakhouse and the meal was fantastic. The conversation was pleasant and typical. Until the nerd-fest broke loose.

Vocabulary Varies

I have sometimes worried about how freakish we sound using our gamer jargon. There is an old (Gen Con?) sketch in which two TSR employees are discussing Top Secret: SI in a bar, in which they terrify the patrons (and get arrested) by excitedly discussing having shot a bunch of people on their latest mission. Our own people get confused looks when we talk about raining fiery death upon our enemies and who got that huge gun that dropped.

Then I heard my brother telling some poker stories, one of which involved a poor fellow who kept losing despite repeatedly flopping the nuts. And no one even blinked.

Language Evolves

I was away from MMOs for a little while this year, so could someone tell me if the vocabulary shifted?

  • Does “inc” now mean, “I intend to solo this group, so the melees should just watch the enemies run by”?
  • Does “pulling” now mean, “I’ll distract this one while half the group rushes into the middle of the spawn”?

I hate looking dumb because I don’t understand what’s going on.

CoX 10 Day Trials

coh[City of Heroes] Any player can now invite others to City of Heroes/Villains and send them a code for a 10-day free trial. This is some sort of referral program, so I presumably get free time if I lure you folks to subscribe. At any rate, if you want me to have Cryptic send you a trial code, drop me an e-mail. It should be good for both Heroes and Villains, so you can try them both.

Odds on the first player to hit level 50 during a 10-day trial?

Dating for Gamers Part 3: Spawn Points

You have had a few months to work on those New Year’s resolutions. Hopefully you are looking a bit better and not gunning for supermodels. We are now ready to meet some women.

Today’s edition of our occasional series for the introverted heterosexual male focuses on assortive dating and mating. Our dominant theme will be supply and demand, along with how birds of a feather flock. Economics, psychology, and gaming, woot!
