Actually I tend to spend my money on different genres, and the free TDs fulfill my need for TDs just fine.

@Katherine: I’ll answer that one, in fact I did a bit above.

Generally I find that while free games can be pretty good, the options and quality isn’t the same.

Desktop Tower Defense is IMHO an exception in quality, but it’s still frustratingly restrained as a Flash app.

But for my money, I’m getting more value paying the small price for Plants vs Zombies or Defense Grid and simply getting a better game. Having played most of the Tower Defense games I find, these are the ones I’ve enjoyed the most.

Free has its price too. No sense enjoying yourself less just to be cheap. =P

Tower defense games need to make it easier to find out what level of difficulty they are (read: I suck at tower defence games).

Also Carl: why would we want to pay for a tower defence game when there are so many out there for free? That not withstanding, I downloaded the demo off Steam, but Popcap games don’t work on my computer.

An ageless and fun mini-game wherever it’s found. Has anyone seen a 3D version anywhere?

GemTD for WC3 is one of my favorite TD games, as its both a bit random and includes mazing. Played in speed mode vs others is a good time.

It’s a shame, because I love this mini-genre, but none of them have gone all out on what I’d like to play most:

Somewhere between Defense Grid’s story & high tech coolness + the mazing abilities of Desktop Tower Defense, there’s a truly great Tower Defense game waiting to be made.

I also have to admit, I get annoyed with the limitations of playing in a Flash app, so I am partial to Defense Grid’s install. I’d like to change resolution, pop in and out of fullscreen with ease, zoom in and out, etc..

Someone should really make a Tower Defense mod for Supreme Commander.

Defense Grid? Why, yes I have. I'm deciding whether to go after those last challenge levels, since some of them do not look like a lot of fun.

Have you played Defense Grid? It’s not free, but it’s another good Tower Defense sort of game.
