Unimpressive Trailers: The Final Frontier.

These are the chronicles of MMO developer Cryptic. Their continuing mission: To seek out new players. To create new trailers that will generate excitement for their game. To boldly take a popular license and make a profitable game.

Judging by the trailer they released earlier today, their mission will be a failure. Clocking in at just over a minute, the trailer actually seemed to decrease interest in the game despite having a prominent spot on the front page of gamespot. The voice-over was uninspired. The game-play footage was too devoid of music to give it a cinematic feel, yet also devoid of the user-interface that makes game-play footage seem genuine.

By contrast, when SW:TOR wants to show off it’s gameplay, they actually played it; user interface and all. When SW:TOR wanted to give a cinematic trailer, they did that too. Both of these efforts had me reaching for my wallet and saying to myself, “God, I hope there’s a lifetime subscription!”

Star Trek Online’s trailers have me reaching for my mouse while saying, “Meh”.

  1. Thanks for the link to the trailers.

And for the lulz as you pretended to have something informative, insightful, or interesting to say about either game.

We knew as soon as the game was announce that SWTOR had you reaching into your pants, you don’t need to repeat yourself.

      1. “SWTOR had you reaching into your pants,”

Ha ha ha ha ha, oh my word!

Ooooooooooooooooh, you meant reaching into his pants for his wallet? Of course you did, I knew that.

Excuse me I have coffee to clean off my monitor.

  2. Insightful little post, I had hopes on pre-ordering STO simply because I’m a Star trek fan, but your definitely right about that lack-luster of a video they just put out.
It did kinda sway my feelings for STO (as I prob won’t buy a CE) but I had already planned on getting SW:TOR because well Star Wars is /drool.

  3. How can you make them pay for every step, it’s space…

But yea, terribad voiceover and now whenever ST is brought up all I’m going to think about is pewpewpewpew in green/yellow/blue/red. And just me or do those graphics look a little rough, especially compared to EVE?

  4. What is even funnier are all the suckers that paid for lifetime MMO sub to Champions Online that are STILL not in the STO beta

  5. Christ, rough audience. I think Suzina’s point is pretty valid. That was a terrible trailer. Whoever decided to put amateur hour voice acting behind that footage made a major mistake. The comparison is also valid because these are the two major SF IPs we have coming down the pipe in the MMO world. Like it or not, there is some overlap in the audience they are targeting.

  6. Really?

When I saw the SW:TOR trailer, I thought “oh, it looks like every other game, with some voice acting”

Yeah I will still buy it. But the trailers reminded me to not expect any paradigm breaking even from Bioware.
