Extremely good analysis. This is also my beef with Skirmishes. They throw the bare bones of the mechanics at the player, right into the face.

The bad thing is that Skirmishes, best taken in small doses according to many players, are probably supposed by the LOTRO Devs to be grinded till they release the next free or paid content update... which I hope will not take too long!

Procedural content is a big part of why I'm still playing Disgaea DS. Fresh challenges are good for the soul.

That said, 3D worlds just aren't the best place for procedural content. It doesn't work well with the worldbuilding.

...which is to say, I agree with the original article.

I guess I'm doing it wrong then :( I run from things like elemental wisps, mycons, and those archers with exploding arrows in the dwarven fortress.

Funny you should mention those three repeatable quests east of the horse farm in Bree-land. I just found those the other day and did them once before calling it quits. Farming for tusks/shells/pelts in the middle of nowhere doesn't sound terribly appealing. Maybe if there was a stable checkpoint nearby :/

Syncaine, you really hit the nail on the head.

I remember lots of times in Diablo 2 having to run, or kite or some other tactic in order to defeat certain enemies.
In Titan's Quest, the same thing.

In Torchlight though I just mow down everything in my path with the same skill. Over. and Over. And OVER again.

Also, Torchlight's lewtz is nothing in comparison to Titan Quest or even Diablo 2.

On Torchlight, what really killed me is that while you do see different looking enemy models, you kill them all the same way: run up and left/right click. Hell even some of the bosses are just a long wait of left click hold and watch.

What separates D2 from Torchlight is that at least in D2, you approached some enemies differently (and certainly the bosses), while in Torchlight it's just wholesale slaughter, something that makes finishing the game ONCE difficult for me.

Not having played it, I would hope the enemies in LotRO skirmishes are more like D2 than Torchlight?
