[GW2] Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend Zwei!

One nice bit of news is that the second Guild Wars 2 pre-purchase access beta weekend was announced in the midnight hours by Chris “Snowcrash” Whiteside on the ArenaNet blog. The most important bit of information of course is that the beta weekend runs from June 8th to June 10th, which gives gamers a good week or so to stock up on foodstuffs and earn points with the significant others. The next bit hints at further blog posts coming down the line:

We have listened intently to all of your feedback from our first Beta Weekend Event, and we’ve made great strides toward resolving many of the issues you’ve helped us identify. These include party movement into overflow servers, chat functionality, key bindings, server stability, performance, and many more that we will detail in the near future.

Since we already know that the asura and sylvari will not be playable, it is likely that the same content will be available to play. This is compounded by the blog’s mention that with no character wipe players will be able to access the explorable parts of the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon (level 35). This is a bold position because instead of limelighting new content to shift community focus, ArenaNet is believably going to keep the same content in a more focused light.   The “great strides” are made all the more critical. That’s bold, ArenaNet.

I have a plan to play the lackey. I plan on playing a “support” elementalist that is big on daggers and the water and earth attunements who will basically run towards players instead of events. Elementalist is one of my last choices for live, and I want to kind of go crazy next beta weekend. What do you plan on doing this time around?

  1. Great point I hadn’t considered Ravious.

Since this is the same content, it really magnifies the focus on these few limited zones, instead of giving just surface level views at the whole game. It’s interesting that they are confident enough in 5-6 zones worth of content that they would let us retread the same grounds again. Will really be interesting to see the reactions of people. If we get through another weekend of the same content and you don’t see a lot of “lol wut content?” I think you can make a strong case that GW2 has hit the “End game starts at level 1” claim on the head. Or at the very least is taking good strides towards that goal.

  2. Great timing for a lot of the Aussies in the audience..
in Australian Eastern time, the beta runs from 5:00am Saturday morning until 5:00pm Monday afternoon – and that Monday is a public holiday in most of Australia!

Three days and two nights of beta, tasty.

  3. So, no new content opened for testing. That bodes poorly for the release date (and if it doesn’t, then it bodes poorly for the rest of the content being able to stand up under the pressure of thousands of people pounding on it).

  4. Likely running the new human thief I made last stress test and might try out an engineer. I’m tempted to keep going on the Charr guardian I was playing all last beta weekend to push ahead to 35 and dungeons to test it, but am a bit wary that I might be getting too familiar with the race’s zones. Maybe I’ll move to Norn or Human mid-20s zone, but it’s less lore-ish that way. I’m carefully avoiding exploring every nook of the major cities to keep some surprises for myself when it finally launches.

And get into more WvWvW whenever I can stand the queue at the portal.

Pretty much wherever my whims and fancies take me.

  5. I dunno, I think I’ll be playing at a more natural pace the next BWE so I don’t need to earn as many points; may even let the SO have a go at it. I’ll probably play around in character creation again as it looks like they were changing some things based on what I saw during the stress test. Lots more PvP because it’s fun and non-spoiler-y and more time in WvW as well.

While I don’t see myself getting bored of PvE anytime soon, I don’t want to spoil too much of it, even though it will be tempting to explore the higher levels. That’s the one thing that bums me out about characters not being deleted, more temptation. I still need to try out a jumping puzzle, though.

  6. So far I’ve done a fair bit of elementalist (mostly dagger/dagger to zoom around as balls of elemental stuff), and some bits of ranger, since I have a collectors habit, and pets are a whole other thing to collect.

This time, I will be taking the Mesmer for a spin. While I was eager to play that before the reveal, the mechanics haven’t seemed very up my alley, so I avoided it thus far. This weekend seems the perfect time to see, if that was all in my mind (and wouldn’t that be fitting?). I’ll also check with the ranger briefly, to see if they made any tweaks to the pet ai and such.

In terms of content, I think I’ll worry less about hearts and more about chasing events this time around, and maybe try my hand at some WvW.

  7. I am super excited for this BWE.

*New Dungeon added to WvW (similar to DaoC)
    *Fixed overflow server issues.
    *Optimized hardware

Basically the bulk of my complaints are in the patch notes. I can’t wait to see the progress.

We still need two more races before release, but this is a great list of patch notes so far.

  8. Grrr!

Either I misread the Massively news item on this yesterday or they had a typo. I’ve spent the last 24 hours thinking the BWE was from the 8th to the 11th, which would have meant I could have played Sunday and Monday.

Since I’m working Saturday it’ll just be evenings and Sunday. Oh well… I can spend Monday blogging about it.

I kind of hope they never show the other two races in the beta weekends and just test them in the closed beta. I’m probably going to stick to playing only Charr for the whole Beta anyway although it does depend how long we have to wait for launch. I might crack if we’re still doing beta weekends in November.

  9. because she was gettin away from char (chars are like cats they suck at crossing roads)
