Cleaning Out

I have been gradually cleaning out my basement, where boxes and files can sit quietly for years. I keep looking at old things and papers and thinking, “This must have been precious once.” I spent a couple hours digging through an old hard drive for anything worth salvaging. Ah, memories. I am right now going through old CDs, boxes, and manuals. Some old friends never to be seen again:

  • Asheron’s Call: Dark Majesty
  • Asheron’s Call 2
  • City of Heroes
  • Dark Age of Camelot

I am still debating some old single player games. I have Bioware’s 2002 Neverwinter Nights, complete in the original box with the 200+ page manual and cloth map. Planescape Torment, I somehow have still never played that. My copy of WarCraft III came with guide books, those can go. (There are still game guides for sale in this internet era, my my. I don’t even buy physical disks for my games these days.)

I did keep the fold-out maps/keyboard controls for AC and DAoC. Some memories I need to keep.

  1. Wow! I got rid of a lot of the same games during one of the moves in the last half-decade. There’s only so many times one is willing to pack up games one is unlikely to ever play again.

  2. Lo these many years later, I still visit Camelot on occassion. Even with Guild Wars 2, Warhammer (hm), Black Desert, et cetera, et cetera, nothing feels like fields of Emain, the halls of Tir na Nog or the depths of Muire Tomb.

  3. In nearly sixty years I can honestly say I have never regretted keeping anything while I bitterly regret having succumbed to the “tidying” aberration several times. I would always advise moving to larger accommodation as a solution rather than reducing the amount one owns.

I also have an unplayed copy of Planescape:Torment. Well, it has been installed and played but only for about half an hour. Possibly the most overrated video game I was ever suckered into buying. That would be an interesting list…
