Of Not Speaking

The Ayorthians think before they speak, and often conclude, after lengthy meditation, that nothing need be said.
— Gail Carson Levine, Ella Enchanted

Many times I type a comment or post, spend a while editing and revising, re-consider the original topic, then decide the world really does not need to hear it. This is presumably how one squares the logorrhea you see here with my being a restrained introvert (or, as Kendricke put it, “the driest MFer in the world”).

If you have noticed that I have not been posting as much lately, rest assured: I am still writing a lot. But you know what high standards MMO players have.

  • You *are* dry, and it’s delightful (especially since I’m usually utterly incapable of it).

I’m an introvert but I have a smaller blog and if I want to post 2000 words daily, I damn well can — especially since I don’t do it to get readers. Hrm. There are parallels available with your logorrhea comment, but I won’t go there today, I’m actually rather sick in RL. That train of thought is the last thing I need.

    Keep on drily keepin’ on.

  • I feel a great deal of camaraderie with the Ayorthians right now. I keep trying to come up with something to post, but eventually work it out in my own mind to the point I don’t feel the need to write about it.

  • If everyone on the Internet practiced this, the place might actually be tolerable most of the time.

  • No problem. The best part of writing is that you can get an entire argument out before realizing what nonsense it is, and then retract the whole thing before making a fool of yourself. Other times, I write something out, realize it’s not even mildly original, and delete it.

A lot of us don’t have the willpower to not read something that’s neither interesting nor original. It’s a public service to hold back sometimes.
