Sitting down to my morning coffee this weekend, I caught a rare glimpse of the highly classified secret MMO being developed by mad scientists in Massachusetts at Curt Schilling’s new studio, 38 Studios.
You can catch the interview with the Big Schill yourself here in its entirety. The exclusive first look at the new game title can be seen at 1:16 in the three minute video. The images are very limited, but we catch a glimpse of a horse and rider, that are graphically appealing, and lead me to believe we are looking forward to a fantasy MMO. Also, Schilling mentions they will be working with a development budget of ’greater than sixty million dollars.’ I suggest you watch the entire interview, because it is actually quite good.
P.S. Schilling plays a Tauren in WoW.

This is too awesome not to repost. Supposedly* that first panel is an actual quote. The PA guys never cease to entertain.

I started to title this post: ‘Where FLS Went Wrong With Pirates,’ but after receiving my very first negative email in response to a blog post, accusing me of bring overly critical, having an axe to grind, and ‘contradicting myself numerous times throughout…’ I have chosen a more neutral title*. Besides, I don’t necessarily think they went wrong, simply made a few poor choices, which will be hard to overcome and could translate into fewer subscriptions at launch and over the first few months…

I have been very silent on this blog for quite some time, partially due to real life obligations, and partly because the bulk of my gaming time has been spent under a strict NDA. That NDA was dropped officially by Pirates of the Burning Sea, as they prepare to enter their open beta phase of development this week.
I am not going to give a run down of the game-play or mechanics in my observations, as Tobold, Keen and others in the blogosphere have fairly in depth looks at the game. My thoughts on Pirates after these messages…

Some quick thoughts before the jump…
- The Blood Elf noob zones are amazingly well designed. They have continuity, great quest synergy and are beautiful and full of unique flavor.
- Starting over from scratch is tough to get used to. I ran out of cash because I trained all of the weapon skills at L10, forgetting that I still have to pinch pennies. Compared to my Twink alliance alt that I started for the 10-19 battlegrounds, who had 2000 gold sitting in her mailbox when she got to the very first mailbox in Goldshire.
- Warcraft, with all of its many flaws is still an amazing game, and nothing can compare to the incredible population levels available in every zone. Many games have whole swaths of territory vacant after the first leveling rush passes, but no matter your level, you can always find others in WoW, no matter where you are or what you are working on.

A few weeks ago, my wife finally got her beta invite to the upcoming MMO that I have been playing a lot of and really enjoying. I can’t wait to share my thoughts but they will have to wait until my NDA restrictions are lifted. So anyway, my wife logs in, makes her character and I start to show her around a bit, and not five minutes in, she looks over at me sheepishly and blurts out, “I miss Warcraft!”
