This year, I renew my often-flagging resolution not to look forward to things. There were three MMO releases I was looking forward to in 2009. The first made me physically ill just from looking at the graphics. If you and your friends made your own version of WoW in your garage, it would look very much like the second. The third I tried with my wife, computers side-by-side, prompting the following exchange:

“I wonder if this gets fun at any point, or if it always sucks.”
“Okay, just so you know we’re on the same page here.”

Here is to low expectations in 2010.

  1. I’m generally of the “try everything with a recommendation” mentality; such games usually have at least one facet I can point toward and claim appreciation.

Fallen Earth was a pleasant surprise, this year. I had no idea what to expect going in, and the nostalgia made me long for Asheron’s Call 2 less. Ooh! And Free Realms! I only just remembered it existed, and had explorer goodness.

Sadly, I haven’t heard of anything coming this year that looks promising.

  2. 2 is Runes of Magic. 3 is probably Aion : / Least inspiring 1-20 experience of any game…ever.
