ArenaNet must feel like spring is in the air despite so many of us being crushed by snow. Either that or they are just getting antsy. Once the guardian profession was revealed ArenaNet has been dropping quite a bit of other information through interviews, fansite forum posts, and official tidbits.
First off, ArenaNet will be at PAX East. They won’t have their own booth, but they will be heavily involved in the NCSoft Meet and Greet happening Friday, March 11 at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel (6-10 PM) as well as multiple panels including their own “Guild Wars 2 – Fantasy MMO Redefined” happening the next day. Oh, and by the way they are bringing a new demo.
The thing that is charging the community’s conspiracy engine is that so far it appears that this new demo will only be playable on 20 rigs during the Meet and Greet. At least that’s all Regina is willing to confirm. A lot of people, me included, think that a brand new demo for that short of time is… well not quite the correct scope for the amount of time and energy it takes to make a demo. Some of us are praying for a internet-wide demo in the vein of E3 for Everyone of Guild Wars past.
I know before the community managers have been pretty quick to squash any rumors of a play-at-home demo, and they haven’t in this case yet, as far as I’m aware. (Consider it squashed.)
Another cool info dump comes from our friends at GuildMag who snagged quite an awesome interview with the ArenaNet crew. While the basis of the podcasted interview is the guardian, all sorts of topics are covered including PvP, leveling, stats, and core design goals for all professions. For example, one topic they covered in depth was how they were treating crits (critical attacks). In many MMOs, there is little difference between a low sustained damage output with a high amount of crits and a high sustained damage output with a low amount of crits. It all evens out. ArenaNet are making the decision to spec for crits a little more important because so many traits and equipment will have a special effect that occurs on a crit. So a guardian might trait a skill that gives the enemy the burning condition on crits, which will effect the whole build. Very interesting stuff, and one of the interviewees, Jon Peters, even stopped by for the after-party podcast.
Things are definitely ramping up. I expect a lot of cool news before PAX East such as more information on the new demo, possibly a new profession reveal, and… Next week ArenaNet is going to cover the human race in-depth all week with all sorts of goodies (even in-game audio and a new video), and humans won’t be the only race getting a whole week treatment in February!
