Naming Names

I snagged all the names I wanted in my new MMO, which is of course the most important thing in life. My Guild Wars 2 stable is a tour through all the major MMOs of my gaming career, carrying forward names from Asheron’s Call, Dark Age of Camelot, City of Heroes, and Lord of the Rings Online. I also kept the names I used in World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 1.

If you have played with me in any of those games, you probably know how to find me. If you are looking for me anew, you could look up Agrimony, Bookbag Pocketshoe, Empedocles, Frosta, Habibu Angela, Lilfa, Osmethne, or Zubon.

: Zubon

It felt appropriate to re-use my Engineer’s name from WAR, but my time there seems not to have been meaningful enough for me to remember it or write it down anywhere.

  1. I always wonder which names actually are the most contested in MMOs — like which names have a higher likelihood that someone else actually will want to use it.

My partner, for example, always frets about getting ‘his’ name but has to admit that he’s the only person using it on all of WoW (according to the armoury) so it’s probably not that popular.

    1. I think the main difference is that the name is possibly unique, world wide? Some fairly obscure names I was going to go for have been taken, and I know I’m the only one who has them in WoW!

On the other hand, I can’t even stay logged in at the moment.

    2. I’d love to see Arenanet post a list of the most tried names during the first day.

I have a friend who was cussed out, then blocked yesterday because he got a name someone wanted.

A lot of people will friend you to see who took their name. You can check the followers tab under contacts to see if you got a name or two that someone else might have really wanted.

  2. I haven’t even managed to log in yet (been trying for an hour). I’m sitting here making a list of possible names while I wait.

I try my best never to use the same name twice although if I did want to stick to the same ones I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be fighting anyone else for most of them.

  3. I got “Ravious” and “Ink” (based off of the movie and The Legend of Ink Catherly, an fantastic online fic). I still need to make my others today, but their names are either ultra-obscure or GW1 names.

  4. I managed to get lucky and snag a semi-decent Asuran name (“Gumm”), even though it took me like 20 minutes to make my character (with the lack of post-creation customization, I had to get it right the first time!).

Single word names of the traditional Asuran construction (Consonant [and standard word starting pairs]-vowel-doubled consonant) names won’t last too long, I think.

Only other name I cared about was my main’s from GW1, which obviously got reserved (a bald Ascalonian Human Warrior with 1800 hours on him named Stulta Militisto [Esperanto for “Stupid Warrior” :P]). His reincarnation/descendant of the same name is also bald, though sports a full beard, unlike his predecessor :).

  5. I didn’t manage to secure my default nickname, but then again it’s “Firefox”, kinda popular. I managed to grab “Fire Fox” and i’ll have to learn to live with that space in the middle (where my heart was :P)

I’m glad i could secure “Majja” for an asura. Those asuran names will be in short supply soon. I also grabbed 2 other names that i care about, so all in all – a good outcome of that unholy namegrab at 6 in the morning.

  6. >Osmethne

nice, I actually remember that. Wish I had thought to use it as a name
