Dust 514: Sounds like a great idea

EVE is going to mix things up a bit. Soon, there will be planets that need to be controlled in order for the rich to get richer. Who controls which planet at which time will be determined by a new FPS / RTS game called Dust 514. The announcement was a while ago, but I didn’t hear about it until my husband saw it on EQ2-daily.com.

There weren’t much in the way of details. It sounds like doing jobs for those ship-flying EVE people will net you ISK to spend on weapons, armor and buffs.

Any time I hear about merging some other kind of gameplay into an MMO, I feel like it enriches the universe the game takes place in. I used to dream of having pod-races in SWG before it came out. I even used to think that holding a gun would play out in a FPS style of control. Planetside sounded like such a great idea! But it only sounded good didn’t it?

What normally carries you to victory in a FPS is skill. That’s what makes the kill in a shooter so delicious. You know you started on equal footing, and you won. But in Planetside, the higher level you get, the less satisfying the kills are. It’s the same thing in a RTS. Yes, your goal is to have a bigger army and destroy your enemy, but it’s satisfying because you know you both started out with the same number of units. If I had a cheat that allowed me to start with more units, I wouldn’t take it. Such a cheat would rob me of the glory of victory.

So does Dust 514 sound like a good idea? Yes, it sounds awesome. Will it actually turn out to be a fun shooter? No, probably not. If people are like me, they’ll prefer to leave their level grinding to their MMOs and play a FPS that doesn’t have buffs.

    Also, CCP is nothing if not innovative. I’m sure that they know the usual pitfalls of games like this (and Planetside) and will actively work to avoid them.

  2. It does sound like a good idea. Like Andrew said, if anyone can fix Planetside, it’s them. I guess. Heh.

    Also I think the success of COD4 and the like go to show that folks love the shit out of earning buffs in their FPS. It is a tricky thing to balance though.

  3. There’s a difference between buffs and perks. Not everyone can have the same buffs–what if I don’t have that R8 Pally on my team, do I get ironskin from my Scout, then?

    On the other hand, in games like COD4, everyone, assuming they’ve completed the requisite tasks, have the same perks. Regardless of who’s on whose team.

  4. I don’t know how good or successful Dust will be but I have to admire CCP’s innovation and amibition. Far too many MMO developers play it safe now and I love seeing companies push the boundaries a little.

  5. Dust sounds really cool. I’d like to see a “Team Fortress” style of class-based play, for a further strategic gameplay. Also the game Savage comes to mind, with integrated RTS building-building to hamper your enemy and assist your team.
