Developer Feedback

You spend all that time on the forums, and occasionally some lucky person gets red/blue name attention. It seems so much like one-way communication, with the occasional community manager contribution. Some games have some developers who comment on some topics, but often the hot issues are avoided or left for an official statement.

In the Kingdom of Loathing, developer Mr. Skullhead responded to some board feedback on the holiday event:

[player], and those who share the sentiment below, **** you. **** each and every one of you. **** you sleeping, **** you waking up, **** you standing, **** you lying down. **** the horse you rode in on, the groom that brushed its mane, and the blacksmith that made its shoes. **** your mother, your father, any siblings, and any other living members of your family tree. **** you.

This is a family blog, so I have edited out some of the 34 F-bombs, but I think we can approve of his candor. If you pursue the link, he responded to specific criticisms as well:

Low drop rates? Favoring farmers? **** you. …
Presents are suboptimal? **** YOU. …
No outfit in the pressies? **** you. …
No wrapping paper? **** you. …
The worst of all of this, the one that really pisses me off, is the whole “you guys were too lazy to write content so you stacked the deck so you wouldn’t have to do any interesting writing.” If you seriously believe that and you’re not just trolling, I invite you to get some mayo, mustard, and maybe a dollop of sour cream, and eat my **** ***.

I need to donate to that game again. I can criticize only the implied connection between graph-making and virginity, although I favor tables to graphs.

MMO Lexicon: Il Cattivo

This is the final part in the series on MMO lexicon. Now, the ugly. The lexicon that carries some baggage. It might be good. It might be bad. Regardless, it carries some heavy prejudices when used. These suckers are the unshaven, motherless bandits that run in to town with a rope around their neck to drink horse water.  The law rarely affects these scum.

MMO Lexicon: Il Brutto

This is the second in a three part series on MMO Lexicon.  Now, the bad.  The lexicon that requires explanation, or doesn’t always make sense.  These are words that a seasoned MMO gamer will know, but that doesn’t make it right.  These suckers are the squinty eyed angels of death that might do you some good, but in the long run they will sell their soul and allegiance for an extra buck. Admittedly, they do get the job done.

Rental !s

Are you worried that your forum posts are not getting the blue- or red-name attention they deserve? Do people seem to be ignoring your blog or the comments you leave on others’ blogs? Here at Kill Ten Rats, we can help. We have an entire line of reliable, high-quality, efficient exclamation points that can add spice and pizazz to your text. They are available in a variety of fonts and provide rent-to-own options. Kill Ten Rats brand exclamation points are only marginally more expensive in the premium “title” edition than the standard “in-line text” edition.

That single exclamation point in the title of the post got you reading this far. Just imagine what you can do with three or five! Did you notice how much more exciting that last sentence was, just with a different punctuation mark? We also provide consulting services to help you identify sentences that can be spruced up with exclamation points or made more efficient by using fewer letters per word. Check out this satisfied customer:

Before: I think the new instance may be bugged. The difficulty of the final boss is much higher than expected, and it does not seem to be possible for most classes to defeat solo. This should not be marked as solo content.

After: Devs! wut is up with that new boss?!?!!! lolbroken!! fix it

Wow. That kind of post really lets them know just who you are and how much thought you put behind your comments. I think we all know what kind of reaction you deserve. Show them what a winner you are, champ!

2009 PC Releases

This is a really exciting link. Go pick what excites you most. For me, that would be League of Legends and Demigod. You know I love DotA, and now real DotA games, rather than trying to graft it onto an existing game? Excellent. Of course, execution is everything, but this is the first I have heard of them, so I am now interested.

Starcraft 2 and Dawn of War 2 are obvious sequels to look for. Solium Infernum sounds interesting enough for me to look into it. Machinarium may be interesting just because steampunk looks cool.

A nice thing about not following development way in advance? Most vaporware goes away before I hear about it, and I have no emotional ties to games that launch late or broken. There are several superhero and sci fi MMOs in development for next year. I look forward to thinking about them about 30 days before they launch.

This is your chance to point out what looks awesome. Or, if you are a developer, to link to the parts of your stuff that you want everyone to use for their first impressions.
