Happy Fun Security Issues

I am too tired to write commentary, so consider this a public service.  If you have an NCSoft Master Account for Aion, City of Heroes/Villains, Lineage 1/2, etc. or you were dumb enough (like I was) to link your Guild Wars account(s) to the NCSoft Master Account (for silly things like another Storage Pane), then I suggest you read this thread.

The tl;dr version is that security holes existed in the NCSoft Master Account page, according to fans, that allowed people to randomly access other people’s accounts by merely signing in to their own accounts.  Then you could do fun things like change game account passwords without needing old game account passwords or jot down personal information.  The powers that be are working hard this weekend to fix or ameliorate security and information issues.

Guild Wars Costume Contest

ArenaNet generously decided to spread some holiday cheer to our little rat-killing corner of the internet, and they have given us two Costume keys to give away to you!  To enter, it’s simple: spread some holiday cheer yourself by commenting (with a valid email so we can contact you) in this thread with a limerick.  I’ll provide a madlib-like template below and a sample, but you can definitely make your own rhyme to enter.

The contest will end December 22, midnight EST, and then I’ll randomly choose two winners.  Please let me know in your comment which costume you prefer.

The Grenth and Dwayna costumes allow players to dress their characters in style this season. These two costumes fit into new costume slots on your character portrait and can be worn over existing armor.  They work like the festival hats we know and love, and can be made and worn for any character by a Costume Maker NPC once the costumes are unlocked for your account.  Check out the nifty FAQ for more info.

Template
There once was a god [verb] [non-verb word].
Who [string of clever words with one that rhymes with the non-verb word].
In my new threads, I followed;
to go kill some Rot Wallows.
And [another string of clever words with the end rhyming with the non-verb word.

Sample
There once was a god giving away white clothes.
Who gave me a new costume and Cheetos.
In my new threads, I followed;
to go kill some Rot Wallows.
And she left me with orange hand prints on my clothes.

Good Luck!

EDIT: Congratulations to Yarrnath and Fraxis!  Please check your inboxes and email me if you have a problem.

A Guild Wars Wintersday Plus

The annual Guild Wars Wintersday has arrived.  We get the usual, awesome tidings of newly balanced PvP snowball fights (complete with hidden rocks and yellow snow), grentchs stealing gifts from the poor war-torn children of Tyria right in town, and fun PvE quests.  This all leads up to the finale between Dwayna, goddess of good holiday cheer, and Grenth, who would destroy it to determine what hats we can wear in the coming year.  And, we all know how important hats are.

Blame November Rain

This week has been really “blah” all around.  There have been some exciting things.  Like a possible new boss battle in Guild Wars.  The Volume 1, epic quests becoming soloable in Lord of the Rings Online.  And of course, the Evil Empire’s RMT sale of drunk panda pets.  It’s all great, I guess.  I would probably care more if it had not rained the past two weekends.

Mostly I have been plugging away at Borderlands.  I gave up on multiplayer.  Yes, I have tried every suggestion (GameRanger, Hamachi, port opening, etc.), and 90% of the time the system refuses.  What drives me absolutely batty is that 10% of the time it lets me co-op and nothing has changed!  Until I see a fix from Gearbox, I am just going to assume I bought and am playing a singleplayer FPS.  And, quite a good one at that.

Last night I decided to head off to bed after turning in a quest, and along the way I got a purple-named revolver that shoots AoE electrical bursts.  I stayed up for another half an hour just roaming around the main zone looking for bandits to electrocute with magnum bullets.

Run, Run Candy Corn Man

I played a bit of Guild Wars last night to finally ease myself in to the Halloween spirit after shaking the Borderlands dust off my mouse for a night.  The servers are alive with Costume Brawl and mat farming, but there is a new addition to this year’s festivities.  The Guild Wars Live Team created a quest chain depicting changes in the Underworld… where you play as a candy corn humanoid. Guild Wars Sealed Deck

Last night, ArenaNet launched a pretty hefty update for Guild Wars.  The update prepared for the annual Halloween bash, my favorite annual MMO event, with Costume Brawl, Mad King Thorn and new Halloween-only quests in the Underworld (where it’s rumored players become actual candy servants of the Mad King).  The weightiest heft in the update was by far the removal of Hero Battles and Team Arenas counterbalanced by the addition of the Codex Arena.

The Codex Arena is a 4-player sealed deck arena with 3-simple rules.  First, each profession will only get to use 20 randomly chosen skills each day, 5 of which will be elite.  These random skills will be the same for all players.  Second, players can only use elite skills from their primary profession (a welcome addition, in my opinion).  Finally, the team of four has to have four different primary professions.  No four Warrior/Monk teams allowed.

The Codex Arena I think will be a great addition to Guild Wars PvP.  My one holdback is the “activation energy” to play.  If the skills change every day how much time is going to be spent creating a team versus actually playing?  My hope is that the elite PvP’ers will create some sort of quick and dirty template (likely they already have) where a team makes one melee, one healer, one harasser, and then something else so jobs can be given out to individual teammates.  I still think that new sealed skills every day might be too high of a turnaround, but I am guessing the Guild Wars Live Team is going to keep a close eye on their new baby.  Things like the amount of skills each day and the skill turnover rate should be easy to adjust.  Either way, it looks like it is going to be a great addition to the Guild Wars PvP gametypes.

Bye Bye Bad PvP

Regina at ArenaNet released news that Guild Wars Team Arenas and Hero Battles will be removed this week.  If you want a bit of crappy nostalgia or some quick, ill-gained rewards from the much despised “red resigns” way to play Hero Battles better do it quick.  I say good riddance and bring on the awesome of sealed deck.  At the beginning of the month, ArenaNet said that sealed deck has all of its basic functionality in place but it needs to go through bug fixing/QA and polish.  Hopefully we get a dev diary on the much anticipated feature soon.

Guild Wars Interview

Thanks to the fine folks at ArenaNet, I had a chance to ask Linsey Murdock and Isaiah “Izzy” Cartwright some questions on the Guild Wars series.  Linsey is the current lead designer for the Guild Wars 1 Live Team, and Izzy is hard at work on Guild Wars 2.  The interview gives some good insight for what both may have in store for the future. Guild Wars “PvP Love” is Format Culling

Linsey Murdock, on the Guild Wars 1 Live Team, wrote a  huge journal update about the goings-on about the Live Team, and the upcoming content update.  The update is quite good as Linsey discusses more technical updates such as the seasonal events and the Xunlai Tournmanet House.  However, the big news is on the “PvP Love” that was rumored to come with the next content update. Soloing Difficulty

To the chagrin of many of the old school, whatever games we see inclusive of the MMO genre now have soloability as a necessity to gameplay.  Many of the millions are playing their own little game where a bit of social contact is never more than a Party-With click away, should they choose.  Even those that crave group challenges as the epitome of their MMO gameplay will find themselves crafting, leveling alts, or advancing rep until the event group starts gathering.  Raids have become some paramount achievement because they are easily made difficult requiring a herding of cat-minded guild members to a number of dance steps.  Yet, solo content is often just considered going through the grind.  “Exalted rep with all the factions,” you say to your guild mate of leisure, “glad you had the time to do that.”  The connotation that skill was not required for the achievement would not be missed between the lines of congratulations.
