SWG’s Overwhelming Success

I received an email from SOE. It seems they are doing very well! In fact, they say, “Due to the overwhelming success of the recent Free Character Transfer Service, …we will close the following 12 Star Wars Galaxies servers:”

I can’t say people didn’t see it coming. Yivvits and Mr Bubble pondered what else could come of a free-character-transfer service which only allowed people to transfer from empty servers to high population servers.

As empty as the low-population servers are, there are those that will be sad to see them go. A lot of the player-created content in SWG is in the player cities. The characters can always still transfer off, but the real estate goes down with the server.

Still Killing Dragons

About 10 years ago, the only raids that existed involved killing dragons in EQ. Today, you can go into the IG-88 instance in SWG and face giant droids with flame throwers. It might seem dumb to have an entire group chipping away at the health of a fire-blowing giant assassin droid, and it should. It is dumb. After all these years, we’re still killing dragons.

Really cool characters like IG-88 shouldn’t be crammed into a raid-mold that was invented for dragons.

It’s not just the dragons either. We’re still doing everything we’ve been doing. Stimpacks are just a health potions. Your armor and heroic jewelry has magic enchantments that makes you stronger and faster. Your medic is effectively just tossing out healing spells. After all these years, we’re still playing the same game with slight changes to avoid copy-right infringement.

Many professions or few

I remember one of the selling points for SWG was how many professions it was going to have. It promised to have dozens of professions. I think this appeals to people because we’re always trying to be special in MMOs. We’re tired of looking like everyone else and having the same abilities that they do, and we want more diversity in the kind of people we bump into. If there are very few people who play a certain profession, it’s natural to assume their rare abilities would make them valuable and fun to play

SWTOR before / after

Sometimes, I wish I could see a nice before and after of the work being done on SWTOR behind the scenes. I mean, we get to see the Sith Warrior on IGN, and people complained about his walk being too hunched-over, or his light-saber hilt being too big. But we won’t really find out until the game ships if these things have changed. The next time they show us stuff, it’ll probably be a new planet or a new class. It’s not like they’re going to do the whole live-demo again with the same classes and do all the same things.

Oh wait, they did.

I’m sure those who want to nit-pick over tiny details will eventually go through the video and pick out every little thing which has changed. I’m not one of those detail-oriented people, but I can say that the new video of the game looks better. Forget the video quality for a moment… the PAX version of the walk-through just looks like a better game than the live-demo they did months ago.

Lotro’s next expansion announced

So… we’ve all been eagerly awaiting Lotro’s announcement of the Riders of Rohan expansion. The massive uproar over the lack of news on the Rohan expansion last week exploded in Sapience’s face. Goodness, what do we have to check every day? Ridersofrohan.com or the announcement forum? We need to know the details so we can start leveling our legendary horses and legendary saddles right?

Well… They announced the expansion. Rohan here we come! Oh wait… no wait….

Siege of Mirkwood?

The expansion is called siege of mirkwood?

Well, they sure fooled me. Damn, did they fool me. Who knows if it was intentional or not, but they really pulled a fast one on people. Well, some people guessed it. But I wasn’t one of them.

I wasn’t always a raider

There was a time in which I loaded up MMOs just to be a part of an online world. For me, it was just an extension of my text-based MUDs. Yes, there was loot and levels to lust after in those games, but there were no raids. It was so rare to have a full group that you may not be aware of mechanics like maximum group size until you had played for hundreds of hours. There was nothing to do at max level except hang out, or maybe join the coding team and make new content. Today, end-game raids are the only reason I bother installing an MMO.

Lotro’s Big Announcment

Before you get your hopes up, there is no big announcement for lotro. My title was misleading. This is a story about how Sapience let rumors of a huge announcement build up all week only to result in massive disappointment. It started in a thread where someone asked about the absence of developer posts about things like class balance and systems.

Dust 514: Sounds like a great idea

EVE is going to mix things up a bit. Soon, there will be planets that need to be controlled in order for the rich to get richer. Who controls which planet at which time will be determined by a new FPS / RTS game called Dust 514. The announcement was a while ago, but I didn’t hear about it until my husband saw it on EQ2-daily.com.

I bet on the wrong raid

I joined a raiding alliance. It seemed like the perfect solution. My kin had never beat any raid bosses and I was tired of spending three hours a week dying to the watcher without any rewards. My kin had also been wiping on the first boss of DN with no luck. So I signed up for a DN raid on my alliance one week, and sadly my kin decided to go into DN at the exact same date/time… they just didn’t post it until the night before the raid.

Medallions

I’ve made my share of posts about “gear gating” with the radiance system in Lotro. I especially hate how some people got the necessary gear by standing in a doorway and using an exploit while that option is no longer available. Well, I’m hardly the first person to complain about these things, and Turbine is actually going to do something. This will be the third system they try with radiance.
