Another Breath of Life

During the last few weeks, when I wasn’t busy at work, a friend managed to indirectly convince me to roll an alt in AO. I’m sick of alts. I love twinking, but I hate leveling up, going through the same dull content I’ve gone through for three years now… all that. But this time it’s a bit different. This time around there is a little bit of competition.

Like Hemorrhoids, But Good

Since my post about community managers is still getting comments, I thought I would point out that many community managers have said, yes, we the won’t-shut-up playerbase are worth the trouble. You are hereby worthwhile. It is an awesome power, and I trust you not to abuse it.

If you have not read through the comments, you might. We may have something from everyone who still works at NCSoft. (Too soon?)

The other side of the coin…

Yes, I have a fondness of ranting and raving about the things in the game industry that irritate me, or that I find to be ridiculous. I have become a bit jaded over the years and pretty cynical. I realized this morning that maybe I have been a little unfair and complained about only part of the problem.

Do gamers have a share in the blame for the problems in the game industry?

Auto Assault Servers Merge

[Auto Assault] It appears that Auto Assault is already planning a server merger. How serious is this? Well, how does combining all servers into ONE server sound to you? It sounds bad to me.

For some time now our player base has been clamoring to merge all of the servers and offer one, unified Auto Assault® experience. And now you’re going to have it: on July 13, we’ll be merging all of the AA servers (US and Europe) into the new combined server, Nexus.

It isn’t looking good for AA.

Hat tip to VirginWorlds on this one.

Be a Cheerleader

When was the last time someone thanked you for doing your job in-game: your healer who saved someone, your tank who took a death for the team, your mage who devastated the boss mob? We have all been pleased by others’ simple thanks or annoyed by people who are demanding or lack gratitude.

In our continuing theme of improving our in-game happiness, make yourself happier by making others happier. Show some gratitude and let happiness resonate through the ten thousand things. Thank someone, not for doing something really unusual, but just for doing a job well.

Hero Online Open Beta

[Hero Online] As I was developing a post on the theme of “please stop making EQ clones,” I stumbled upon the open beta of a new MMO that seems be a bad Diablo clone. Would a lack of instancing make it a bad EQ clone, instead? In addition?

Has anyone tried Hero Online? I ran through ten levels and change last night. My present recommendation would be not to mention the game’s existence except as a warning, but I am open to the notion that things become interesting later.

Solo Priest is Sad Priest

wow[World of Warcraft] When I last left my guildmates, the group I was in continued to play together that night and it appears they got to level 9. I logged out at level 6.

Therefore, I’ve been playing a little catch up by fighting solo. I managed to get to level 8 over the past few days, but it is not fun by myself. I really prefer a group. I have a few quests that I can’t solo. I wish WoW had the LFG tool that DDO has. It is pretty sweet really. You go into your quest panel and find a quest you want to do. In that panel is a looking for group toggle. Basically it tries to find a group that wants to do the same quest you do. WoW could really use this. Instead you need to spam the chat channels or stand around near the quest area and hope someone comes along.

Level 8 and no PvP combat yet. Although a high level gnome was following me around for a while.

Celebrate Small Victories

Celebrate Small Victories

Let us try a simple variation on gaming gratitude journals: gaming gratitude moments. Barring outrageous fortune, something will go well tonight. Narrow this down to its smallest unit and celebrate as many of those as you can stomach.

A pull went perfectly — yay! Someone did a drive-by buffing of your newb — woo! You got out of xp debt — score! You cleared an entire level of the map — we win again! Every time something goes well, cheer: aloud, on Teamspeak, in /team, wherever you can do so without irritating others. Don’t be that annoying guy who lists every single drop he gets, but take pleasure in all the little things that go right.

We often dwell on one bad thing, and it spoils the night. Why not try to swamp it with dozens of small victories?
