A Day In the Life

cov[City of Villains] Folks asked for a typical day in City of Villains, so here is the running account of today’s play. [edit: I have been informed that this is pretty boring. Sorry about that.]

Log in my level 39 Dark Blast/Thermal Radiation Corruptor. Friends are also in this level range (two 38 Masterminds, 35 Dominator), so I immediately join them. We run a few missions against Wailers and Circle of Thorns, then they all need to go for various reasons.

Binds for Masterminds (and buffers/healers)

cov[City of Villains] All Masterminds: please follow THIS LINK. Do what it says and use it consistently. Practice a bit solo so that you are comfortable with the controls when we group together.

What am I linking to? This lets you control all your pets from the numperpad. Want them all in passive mode, only attacking the one target you tell them to then going back to passive? That’s three keystrokes. Getting them out of the doorway so the rest of the team can get through? One stroke and a click. Spread out to avoid AoE attacks? You can send each of your three types of pets in a different direction.

If you have buffs and are not using the number keys, you are making things too hard on yourself.

Valentine’s Day, in-game

coh[City of Heroes] I am the only married member of our supergroup online. As far as I know, the guys laughing on Teamspeak as they enjoy PvP have no significant others at all. I do not know which is the cause and which is the effect. At any rate, we do not have enough people together for the Tuesday Night Strike Force. Oh well.

Romance at my house: we are going to eat dessert and watch Serenity, with the comment track going this time! Ah, love!

The Joy of Empathy

coh[City of Heroes] Empathy is perhaps the most loved and hated power set in City of Heroes.

Most games have a healer class of some sort, usually paired with buffing and/or some small amount of damage. City of Heroes has Defenders, which has the most diverse primary power set of any archetype. Depending on your power set, you might be healer, buffer, debuffer, or combination. Empathy will be the most familiar.

Good News Is No News

cov[City of Villains] How often can you post, “I logged in and beat up some ogres with my friends last night. It was awesome”? Frequently, nothing particularly of note is happening in-game, or at least nothing that has not happened a hundred times before. We play, we have fun, we log and go to bed. There is some leveling and massive violence interspersed.

To me, this is usually a positive game experience, but it makes for dull blogging.

City of Casual Players

coh[City of Heroes] Lum has some good thoughts about casual vs. raid content in WoW. I have some scattered comments from a City of Heroes/Villains player’s perspective.

By that dichotomy, we are all casual here. Every last one of us. Even the most hardcore player is not going to do many raids in City of Heroes. Why? We have one raid. One. His name is Hamidon, and we know the exact way we are allowed to defeat him. We know this to be the only way because all other options were nerfed within a week of being successful. Our one raid requires at least 60 people to have much chance of success. As such, no guild can monopolize it or even do it alone. Also, everyone who shows up gets a reward, so there is no reason to exclude anyone who will not get us all killed.

Learning Skills

EVE[EVE Online] One of the things EVE Online is known for is skill training in real time. That is, you click the start button, and the skill trains. It takes a certain amount of time, whether you are online or not, and then you get the skill level when that time is up. Pretty simple.

About the only way to make this go faster is to improve your attributes (Perception, Intelligence, etc.), either through the Learning skill set or by buying valuable cybernetic implants. Conversely, the only thing those attributes do is cut skill training times.

As a player, you face a simple choice: learn Learning skills or go for directly useful ones. You must play for a long period of time for the time spent on the Learning skills to pay itself back, but the best time to train those skills is from day one, before you really know whether you want to play EVE. This must have interesting effects on player retention, and I presume that someone at CCP has done the math.

Return of the Janitor

EVE[EVE Online] I have mentioned before about the Important Storyline mission of “give the janitor a ride to his vacation spot.” Working for another corporation recently, I was again offered the chance to be a janitor’s taxi, a mission that strongly affected my standings with several empires. This is a janitor of some import. I realized, talking with him while we warped between systems, that the janitor is actually Chuck Norris.

As the greatest actor of our time might say, “Whoa.”
