The Joy of Empathy

coh[City of Heroes] Empathy is perhaps the most loved and hated power set in City of Heroes.

Most games have a healer class of some sort, usually paired with buffing and/or some small amount of damage. City of Heroes has Defenders, which has the most diverse primary power set of any archetype. Depending on your power set, you might be healer, buffer, debuffer, or combination. Empathy will be the most familiar.

Good News Is No News

cov[City of Villains] How often can you post, “I logged in and beat up some ogres with my friends last night. It was awesome”? Frequently, nothing particularly of note is happening in-game, or at least nothing that has not happened a hundred times before. We play, we have fun, we log and go to bed. There is some leveling and massive violence interspersed.

To me, this is usually a positive game experience, but it makes for dull blogging.

City of Casual Players

coh[City of Heroes] Lum has some good thoughts about casual vs. raid content in WoW. I have some scattered comments from a City of Heroes/Villains player’s perspective.

By that dichotomy, we are all casual here. Every last one of us. Even the most hardcore player is not going to do many raids in City of Heroes. Why? We have one raid. One. His name is Hamidon, and we know the exact way we are allowed to defeat him. We know this to be the only way because all other options were nerfed within a week of being successful. Our one raid requires at least 60 people to have much chance of success. As such, no guild can monopolize it or even do it alone. Also, everyone who shows up gets a reward, so there is no reason to exclude anyone who will not get us all killed.

Stealth stealth nerfed

cov[City of Villains] Every game has the mission of “go click on x.” City of Heroes/Villains does that quite a bit, usually combined with “and beat up some stuff.” Actually, that summarizes the gameplay of almost every MMO: run, click, kill. I have a discussion of that I occasionally toy with. Anyway…

The latest patch keeps you from clicking glowies while stealthed or phased. That is, you cannot steal things while hiding. You must stop hiding, defeat anyone who can see you, then go back to sneaking around. This is one of those interesting decisions that makes sense in some cases: how do you pick something up while intangible? Actually, heroes partially unphase all the time. Can you just pick something up and hide it under your invisible shirt? I recall Harry Potter doing that several times. Wouldn’t someone notice your opening the chest and taking things out? Okay, you have a point there.

Tuesday Night Strike Force

cov[City of Villains] Easily the best part of returning to City of Heroes/Villains has been our supergroup’s Tuesday night strike force. This has become a regular event for the past couple of months, and I have seen almost all of the City of Villains strike forces. We will probably pick up the strays in the coming weeks, and maybe we will hit some City of Heroes task forces.

Same Character, Different Game

EVE[EVE Online] I seem to have three characters, which I play across a number of games. As I have mentioned, I tend towards healers and support classes. In City of Heroes, I have two level 50 Defenders, and my highest level villain is a Thermal Radiation Corruptor (buffer/healer). I have the name Zubon reserved as a Defender on almost every server. My second character is a mage/blaster/whatever they are called in your game: the glass cannon. My third character is the pet class. Ideally you combine them, so my Dark Age of Camelot character was a Theurgist (nuking mage with buffs and quasi-pets).

Flying around EVE Online while my superhero wife worked on hitting level 50, I contemplated EVE drones and CoV Masterminds, since both of my current main characters in CoV are Masterminds. When I am not playing the game where my henchmen destroy my enemies for me, I play the game where my drones destroy my enemies for me. I seem to have turned the two most polar opposite games out there into the same game. That feels really weird.

On the other hand, I am posting during combat, so there are advantages to playing this way.

Holiday Rocketpack

coh[City of Heroes] Hooray for holidays! I wanted to play CoH tonight to do some missions with my friend across the country and found out there was some patch to load up. Once that was done, I logged in.

The first thing I noticed is that something was given to me. I looked at my action bar and saw a feather icon. Turns out it is a Holiday Rocketpack (note the snowflakes). For the next 30 days, I can fly! For those of us that never got to fly, it is a sweet present. However, it was also a large carrot dangling in front of me I was working for. Perhaps it is also now an “exit point” for me. Hmm.

Anyway, I’m going to have a lot of fun flying around for the next 30 days, until they take my rocketpack away.

This event also applies to City of Villains.

Best. Contact. Ever.

cov[City of Villains] Go create a character in City of Villains and level up to 30. Do enough newspaper missions to get Vivacious Verandi as a contact. Then do all her missions.

Do it now.

While the missions themselves are nothing special, this is a great example of how a bit of text can affect the feel of the game. Viv wants you to destroy things and cause chaos. Oh, and shout, “Wheee!” This is why we are villains: to break things and laugh as we trick our enemies into punching each other in the face. It is nice to have a contact with that spirit. Actually, many of us seem to play our heroes that way in a lot of games…

Oh, and Hardcase? You’re a punk. :p (You’ll understand that, since you’ve gone and run Viv’s story arc by now.)

A Message Of Thanks

cov[City of Villains] I just got this message sent to me from a guy named “Tech Support”. He is a Mastermind in City of Villains on the Liberty server.

As we approach the holiday season for giving thanks, I’d like to say a little something about my two loyal robots, Root and Reboot. These two mechanical monsters are something to behold. Whether it’s a bank robbery or a kidnapping ahead of us, they always perform to perfection.
