Collector’s Edition

I decided to cancel my Warhammer Online Collector’s Edition pre-order today. It has nothing to do with my feelings about the game. It has everything to do with thinking about my past CE purchases. Did I get value from them or was it just excitement about the game? I decided, even in the case of World of Warcraft, that is was just about getting something that makes my character a little special or unique. Yes, the lovely in-game items.

All in all, I do not feel it was money well-spent for me. Sure, the art books are cool and the soundtrack is nice, but I have not looked at the art book more than once or twice. The big giant boxes also need to be displayed somewhere, I can’t bring myself to toss them out. So, I ask you: Are Collector’s Editions worth the extra money to you? Why or why not?

Wizard101 Mini-review

What do you get when you mix ToonTown Online, Pokemon, Harry Potter, and a Trading Card Game? Wizard101.

I’ve been playing around in the beta for a few days now and I thought I’d share my first impressions.

Note: This game is targeted mainly at the pre-teen age group, but I strongly suspect there will be plenty of adults playing.

Character creation has two paths. You may answer questions about yourself and have a school of magic suggested, or you can skip that and just choose a school. There are seven schools of magic (technically six and one more that is a little of each school). The schools are: Fire, Ice, Myth, Storm, Life, Death, and Balance. The school you choose is where you will focus your “training” but you can still pick up skills from other schools. You build a deck with various cards (or “spells”) you earn during training or as rewards.

Happy 7th, Anarchy Online

Anarchy Online turned 7 years old on June 27th. Happy (belated) Birthday!

May 3, 2001- Funcom proudly announces that the Anarchy Online release date for North America will be on June 27, 2001. Anarchy Online will be the first game in years to take up competition with the existing online worlds of Ultima Online (Electronic Arts), EverQuest (Sony) and Asheron’s Call (Microsoft).

The release of Anarchy Online will mark a milestone on the massively multi-player online gaming arena. Not only is Anarchy Online the first online world in a science fiction setting, the game also promises exceptional graphics and a gaming world that gives the phrase “dynamic gaming environment” a brand new meaning. It will also be the first in the upcoming second generation of 3D massively multi-player online games.

“Online games are the future of the industry, and a subscription based business model will in some years become a common platform for making money,” says Funcom president Andre Backen. “Funcom has been working on Anarchy Online since 1996 and considers this the most ambitious project the industry has yet seen with over 70 employees dedicated to working on this game.”

Warhammer Guild Beta

The Warhammer Online Guild Beta starts in July. This means release is getting closer and closer.

Guild Leaders – prepare your recruits for WAR!

It has been one year since the first call for guilds to join the battle was answered and now the moment will soon be upon us. Mighty guilds, long lying in wait, have raised up their banners to make ready and the drums of war resound within their great halls. Legions of fierce warriors form their ranks, and will soon mount their attacks on WAR’s vast battlefields. They stand on the precipice in anticipation, ready to vie for honor and glory in the name of their Realm.

Now is the time for the best of the best to band together as one and clash against their enemies. Starting in July, these guilds and thousands of players will compete for domination in the great arena of the Age of Reckoning.

Like a fine wine, our Closed Beta and all that it encompasses has only improved with time. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our talented development team and the invaluable feedback of thousands of testers, the game is looking great and stands poised, ready to play host to a legion of guilds and their members.

The guilds we’ve selected have touched most every MMO released, and several hail from the frontlines of popular First Person Shooters. These testers cover every play style under the sun, and truly embody the social diversity we will welcome and encourage at launch. These guilds, and many more like them, will be the foundation of a great community that we look forward to serving for years to come.

Shout Out To Massively

When Massively.com first started up I thought to myself, oh great another site to gather and repeat all the news I’ve already read. Well, I was happily quite wrong. They have consistently put out new, original content as well as having a lot of exclusive first looks at upcoming MMOs. Sure they fill up my feed reader faster than I can keep up with it, but I have to admit they are serving up a *lot* of really great content. Congratulations on a job well done folks!

Blindsided By Conan

Age of Conan has left me without much to write. Well, what I really mean is that I’d rather play AoC than write about it. Funny that, I was not even planning to give this game a try and I normally try all the MMOs after release at some point. For some reason, AoC just did not grab me at all when reading the previews. Honestly I expected it to be a disaster. But now that I have been playing it for a while, I’m having a hard time wanting to play anything else.

Lord of the Rings Online had been my main game for the past year and I was not expecting to stop playing it until Warhammer Online came out. After a few weeks of AoC, I can’t even bear to play LotRO at all. I love the lore of Middle-earth and I know next to nothing of the Conan world and yet, I find myself eagerly reading all the Hyborian quest text presented before me.
