[City of Heroes] Hooray for holidays! I wanted to play CoH tonight to do some missions with my friend across the country and found out there was some patch to load up. Once that was done, I logged in.
The first thing I noticed is that something was given to me. I looked at my action bar and saw a feather icon. Turns out it is a Holiday Rocketpack (note the snowflakes). For the next 30 days, I can fly! For those of us that never got to fly, it is a sweet present. However, it was also a large carrot dangling in front of me I was working for. Perhaps it is also now an “exit point” for me. Hmm.
Anyway, I’m going to have a lot of fun flying around for the next 30 days, until they take my rocketpack away.
This event also applies to City of Villains.

Today is my birthday. Almost 40. Damn. Why am I still awake at 12:01 AM? Go to bed right now. OK.

Brad McQuaid posted something he wrote about instancing over at GamerGod and it kicked of a pretty good debate on the forums there. I decided to put down some thoughts I have and I hope they make some sense.
There is a group of customers for just about any type of MMOG. World of Warcraft (WoW) has tapped into what I would call the “main stream” MMOG market. Just like a blockbuster movie that cost a lot to make and is making a lot more back, WoW cost a lot to make and is making a lot more back. Blockbusters get people excited about the genre and opens more doors. Blizzard did a service to the MMOG industry by being the success they are. Who can deny this?

[EVE Online] One thing I really like about the EVE devs is their blog. They frequently post things about the game. Sometimes it is ideas they are pondering and sometimes it is new changes coming to the game. They even allow players to respond back, what a concept!
The most recent dev blog is one I enjoyed in particular. It discusses some new ships being introduced into the game: Carriers, Titans and Motherships. Let me run down some of the details for you.

The Carnival of Gamers has made it’s ninth stop, this time at The Game Chair. Our own Zubon has set up a booth, but he might not yet know about it. I snuck him in at the last minute while he was sleeping.
The next stop for the carnival will be right here at Kill Ten Rats. Where I live, this is the time of the Winter Carnival. Therefore, I plan to turn the next stop into a winter wonderland. So get your submissions ready, it’s going to get really cold out and the Ice Palace needs help being built.

[ToonTown] My kids have been playing TT for a few months now. As a responsible parent, I had to try it out first to make sure it was appropriate for them. OK, I’ll admit I wanted to check it out anyway. I found a few things in the game rather appealing.
In TT, you can wander around the city streets without fear of bad guys for the most part. However, if you get too close to one, combat will begin. Combat is turn-based and pretty simple. You pick which attack (called gags) you want to use and which bad guy (called cogs) to attack, assuming more than one cog. As you use various gags, you gain skills in that type of gag. When the skill reaches a certain point, you will get a better gag (more damage) in that same line. You can get new types of gags by doing missions for various NPCs.

[City of Villains] I just got this message sent to me from a guy named “Tech Support”. He is a Mastermind in City of Villains on the Liberty server.
As we approach the holiday season for giving thanks, I’d like to say a little something about my two loyal robots, Root and Reboot. These two mechanical monsters are something to behold. Whether it’s a bank robbery or a kidnapping ahead of us, they always perform to perfection.

[EVE Online] EVE Online has this print magazine you can subscribe to, called EON. In the first issue, they offered advertising to the various corporations in-game. It was a new way to try to expand your corp. Understand, this is a real magazine – delivered to your home.
The devs just announced that they will be selling ad space in the future issues. But get this, it will cost you ISK (the in-game currency of EVE). In fact, it appears to cost you 200 million ISK to place an ad. Now that is a bit of a twist, right?

[City of Villains] I am finding City of Villains to be quite a bit more fun than City of Heroes and I wanted to get a grasp on some of the possible reasons why. So I listed out some things I liked to see where it leads me.
1. New game: This one is simple; it is a new game and that brings all that is associated with it. Most every MMO seems fun during the learning phase. New shiny and all that.
2. Interesting settings: By this I mean the look and feel of the surroundings. While much of them are destroyed, the cities are filled with variety. Slums, docks, rubble, grafitti, etc. Haven’t really seen anything like it before.

Star Wars: Galaxies still sucks. Film at 11.
Really, all they have accomplished here is to chase away all the people willing to play that horrible excuse for a game. I gave it some decent play time, ignoring the bugs, and still could not really find any enjoyment. It is an improvement in my opinion, but not enough.
These changes may encourage some previous players to try it out for a month and many of the current players will stick around (just how much grief can you do to these people before they finally quit?) but I just don’t see any possibility of drawing in brand new players. It ain’t going to happen. The writing is on the wall my friends, the game is doomed.
