The Move Is On

EVE[EVE Online] The last few weeks have been interesting to say the least. Our corporation (Ars Caelestis) had another corp we highly respected merge into ours. Shortly after that there was an election for the HUZZAH Federation president. The leader of the corp that merged into ours decided to run and one other player in another corp also decided to run. The election was close but a winner was chosen.

Everything changed for us after the election. It became clear that our corporation’s direction and goals did not really match up with those of our alliance any more. We discussed it at length and decided to leave the alliance so we gave our official notice. Not long after that the corp that merged into ours announced they wanted to go their own way as well and left our corporation and the alliance. My time with HUZZAH was very enjoyable and exciting and I won’t soon forget all the fun we have had.

The Log In Trap

EVE[EVE Online] Let’s see if we can solve this problem, the “log in trap”. Basically, this is a situation in EVE (but it could happen in most MMOs) where the enemy gathers in an area and then logs off. Waiting for your group to show up in some way (using an alt to observe the area), they all log in at one time and wipe out your side. There is no way to know how many of them are logged off so you can’t prepare (even if you are lucky enough to get intel that they logged off there in the first place). Most of the time you are completely suprised and wiped out.

Sounds like an exploit doesn’t it? It’s certainly a weak tactic. Metagaming I suppose.

EVE China Sets World Record

EVE[EVE Online] I just read this over on the EVE forums. In just one day (granted it is open beta) China surpassed all previous concurrent records for EVE Online. The previous record was around 26,000 people playing in a single gameworld.

CCP Games, the game’s Icelandic developer, today announced that more than 30,000 users were concurrently playing in a single gameworld, which it claims is a new world record. In the first day, more than 200,000 people registered for the game. The Chinese version of the game is run by Optic Communications and runs independently of the Western edition of EVE Online.

June 14 Update: 33,000 PCU (Peak Concurrent Users) and now up to more than 360,000 registrations.

How Do You Manage EVE Faction?

EVE[EVE Online] I am back on the far side of the EVE Gate for another month. The last time I was here, I was working for the Gallente Navy, which made me lots of Gallente friends but the Caldari may hate me forever. Between the derived modifications and actually blowing up Caldari ships en masse in missions, the Caldari State stopped inviting me to parties.

This time, I have been working to balance that out. I am now in Caldari space, running missions for Caldari corporations. With some social skills, my gains from Caldari faction have been higher than my losses to Gallente faction… until they sent me to fight Gallente invaders. A single mission can do significant damage to the Gallente good will I earned last time. I am not even working for the Caldari Navy; my contact is with the Corporate Police Force, a friend to Hyasyoda Corp.

Is there a way to keep taking combat missions without blowing up one of the four empires? I don’t mind pirate hunting, but blowing up my own race is not a winner. Or do you have a better notion of how to manage faction?

Some Things EVE Online Did/Does Right

EVE[EVE Online] A new day, a new galaxy! While most games content themselves with taking us to a new world, EVE Online takes us to a new galaxy filled with worlds. You could control an entire system on the other side of the EVE Gate!

I do not need to say as much about EVE, I suspect, because most of our contributors here have played and commented. Still, there are some things I would like to address. After all, even if you do not enjoy EVE, you must respect what they are doing. The game has an independent vision, an increasing player base, and bold prospects for the future. It strikes out from the mainstream “Yet Another Fantasy MMORPG” approach and has a different take on what a MMO should be and do. Even the one-server approach is rare. I expect to return to EVE sometime soon.

Easy Come Easy Go

EVE[EVE Online] I decided to leave my corp out in 0.0 for various reasons, none of which involve the corp itself. So, I posted a small goodbye (for now) post on the corp forum and before I knew it I couldn’t even access the forums any more. Talk about security.

I was still technically in the corp but they cut me out of the forums and my chance to read all the “sad farewells” and “fly safes” and “you’ll be backs” and of course the “can I have your stuffs?” was gone. *sniff* Oh well, that’s the sort of thing that 0.0 life gives you. Better to be safe than sorry (unlike another big alliance that I used to belong to and I can still read their forum to this day).

Happy Birthday EVE

EVE[EVE Online] Three years and still going strong, in fact getting stronger. Happy Birthday to EVE Online.

My first character has left Ars Caelestis and joined Ashpool Industries. I found a better fit for him as he is heavy into the production side of things. He can know be found supervising multiple factories and collecting fat paychecks.

My second character (who is now my main character) is training up only combat-related skills and has joined Ars Caelestis to replace my first character. He has a lot to learn and is hoping to get some combat action soon. Sadly, he missed out on the BoB assault, but he should be ready for the next round of whatever-may-come.

P.S. Check out the “No Other Destiny” video here. Sweet.

Feels Good

EVE[EVE Online] Finally got back out and shot down some rats. Damn that feels good. It’s like I haven’t played EVE for the last month, which is probably pretty accurate. Nothing gets the blood flowing like a good old fashioned explosion.

Anyway, I started playing around with Flickr some to hold some of my screenshots, we’ll see how it goes.

Lost In Space

EVE[EVE Online] I’ve been playing EVE Online now since May 2005. In the last month, I think I might have left the station once. Ever since I purchased my second account during the special promotion CCP ran, all I have been doing is logging in to train.

The end result of this is I’m starting to forget how to actually play this game. I’m feeling like a noob again. Only this time since I’m not a noob I feel too stupid to ask questions because I should already know this stuff. Really, I just need to get back out and blow something up.
