NASA MMO…EG

As you probably know, NASA recently put out an RFI (Request for Information) regarding the development of a MMOEG (educational game). The deadline for responses was today, at 11:59P Eastern, but it looks like they killed the page early this afternoon (not found) and now the link is password protected. If you didn’t get your submission in before they did this (or at least wrote the right information down) you are probably out of luck.

Anyway, I’ve posted my own thoughts on what NASA might or might not end up with, but I am curious to see what the KTR community thinks. After looking around at random other blogs, reviews, and whatever, I get the feeling that the gamer community, as a whole, may have missed the point about what NASA is looking for and trying to build. Forgive me for not saving the link, but I actually saw some comments on a Second Life blog implying that NASA and Linden Labs (makers of SL) were planning on creating a research company in SL to research the viability of a MMO (??). Even more amusing (or perplexing, depending on your point of view) one commenter expressed some befuddlement at the idea that NASA would consider building a MMO independently and not just build a space station or something within Second Life. (“…”).

What do you guys think?

New Video Card

Holy crap, is this what the game is supposed to look like? I’m no longer watching a slideshow. I really don’t know how to deal with this. Things are fluid. I can see individual drops of rain and snow in power effects. Some things have entered the uncanny valley, where it is disturbingly no-longer-cartoony and a touch surreal.

A Reminder About Requests

If you cannot be bothered to type a complete request, you must not care that much about the team. Really, if you are going to ask anyone for anything, at least go through the motions of using real words. Also, I am not trusting that guy to heal me.

Sadly, some of the best players I know type this way, so it does not work as a heuristic, but at least I don’t have to try to read that for an hour with no guarantee that this is not another idiot.

Trinity Calls

miningI’m back in EVE Online.

I foolishly thought I was finally done with this game and gave away most of my ISK (in game money) to Alaph. This was done, in part, to discourage my return. However, I recently learned some co-workers started playing EVE and they have lured me back in to help them. Therefore, I canceled my WoW and EQ2 accounts and fired up my EVE accounts. Playing with friends trumps over playing a game you vowed to never play again.

I logged in to find myself deep in Goonswarm space. It appears they have pushed BoB out of what used to be ASCN space when I left. The nice folks in local spent some time trying to recruit me and finally relented to my requests for a pod-destroyed trip to Empire space. Even better, they purchased all my ships and modules at a more than fair price before sending me on my way. Good folks out there, nice to know.

Found I still had a few ships in Empire so now it’s time to learn about the new features added since I left. If nothing else, the new graphics in the Trinity expansion look amazing!

Double XP Overcrowding

Freedom is full, and Virtue is in the red. All the other servers are under yellow load. They upgraded hardware specifically for this event, and players are still overloading it. The game may not have had this many concurrent players at release. I don’t know where all these people are coming from. The villain events on Freedom must be going well, except when someone disconnects and cannot return for a few minutes.

TravelA fine day for travel!

I awoke with a great desire to cast my eyes upon new places. Therefore I sold some of my vast collection of hooves, paws and teeth to a vendor and purchased a ride out the Great East Road to the Lone-lands. On my way, I passed by the appropriately named Forsaken Inn.

I reached the destination stable and could see Amon Sûl way off in the distance. Amon Sûl is also known as “Hill of the Wind” or Weathertop. Weathertop used to have a watchtower on top of it, which held a palantíri. I bet you didn’t know I was such a historian. Truth be told, the stable master wouldn’t shut up about it.

I decided to travel to the top and see what I could see. Finding the right path took a few tries but I eventually found my way. I decided I had done enough hiking for one day and chose to make camp for the night on top of Weathertop. Not a bad day’s work. Didn’t hunt anything other than some birds, but at least they were tasty.

Hunter Journal: Page 19

Today I was riding a horse and some weird guys in black robes started chasing me near the Brandywine River. I got away, but during the escape through some trees I got poked square in the eye with a small branch. I have to wear an eye patch for a few weeks now. It’s me shootin’ eye too! I don’t feel like writing anything more in my journal today. Mood: frustrated.
