The Covert Operation

EVE[EVE Online] Part of what pulled me towards playing EVE was a few incidents that occurred in the game. One involved something on the line of tricking many investors into handing over money for nothing and the other involved gaining the trust of a few key people only to betray them. It was quite intriguing to me. Many people would call this griefing or cheating. The developers of EVE seemed to have allowed it to happen and by doing so perhaps even encouraged more such behavior.

Don’t they care about the people that might quit because of losing everything? Or are they counting on gaining more people than they lost because of the publicity? To me, this is a fascinating subject. Certainly, EVE is doing better than it used to, could it be because of these events? They got quite a bit of attention from them.

Another Day In The ‘Verse

[EVE Online] I took some time off from my job search. It seems most corporations out here have odd work hours and they don’t much jive with my sleep hours. So I need to find a few corporations that operate when I do.

In the meantime, I found I nice deal on an Osprey just a few jumps away from my current home station. I placed the order and jumped in a shuttle. I picked up the Osprey and promptly named it “Rock Tumbler”. The Osprey is a good ship for mining.

I needed to order a few parts for the ship, namely a few good mining lasers. I found a deal for 4 of them in Jita, which was 6 jumps away, so I insured the Osprey and off I went.

ISO: Corporation

eve 01[EVE Online] I’ve spent the last week or two reading up on various corporations in EVE. I’ve been trying to find one that meets my ideals. Lately I’m missing out on the social aspect in game since a few people quit and a few people went off to PvP land.

I’ve got my eye on one that seems just about perfect for me. I’ll be contacting them soon to see how we mesh. One item of concern for me is that I plan to write here about things we do, so I’ll need to bring it up and see what they think about it. I am willing to keep some things out of the limelight, but being that this is a corp with all intentions of being neutral I don’t think it will be a huge issue.

Also, I’m going to have to sell some of my ships. I’m going to follow the rule, “don’t fly anything you can’t afford to replace”. I currently have a ship that is way over my head so it will need to go into mothballs for a while. I’ll sell the other ones I don’t need as I am assuming I’ll be relocating once I get “hired” by a corporation.

Nothing To Play

Like Zubon, I have cancelled EVE Online. I could echo a lot of what he wrote below, but instead just read what he wrote below. For me, there is more. I am feeling little to no desire to play any MMOG right now. I’m sure it will not last long, but for now here it is.

I even reactivated my World of Warcraft account to see if that would help. After logging in to a brand new RP server and having two Paladins run into an area I was fighting in and then yelling at me to “find my own mobs to kill, ass” that I decided to bow to them and log out. That was some stunning Paladin roleplay, boys.

So what now? I don’t know. What I liked most is actual roleplay and grouping with people I know. It seems hard to find either these days.

No Sign of the Janitor

[EVE Online] Zubon’s subscription to EVE Online goes on hiatus, due to the lack of a continuing janitor storyline. Actually, I found a lack of interest in entering 0.0 space, running missions, trade runs, or mining; in unflattering terms, gank or be ganked, running the same set of missions over and over again in hopes of an occasional different story not involving janitor transportation, AFK auto-drive for hours, or staring at rocks. Despite that characterization of the gameplay, I still expect to return to the EVE universe at some point. Rather entertaining at points, and an interesting concept for a skill system.

While the rest of KTR continues with the new shiny, I have hopes for that City of Heroes spark to strike again, Kingdom of Loathing has Ascension, and I have been rolling a lot of katamari. Also, conference next week for work, and being out-of-town tends to keep me out-of-game.

Glitch

[EVE Online] I have a new laptop for work/travel and I decided to install EVE in case I get bored on my next business trip (soon!). I fired it up and noticed something strange with my character. I was bald!

Ethic BaldEthic Hair

Hmm. Well they did just release a patch, perhaps they made some changes. I asked in our corp channel and everyone said I still have hair (although the comb-over comments were not needed, damn). So, I promptly logged into my main PC and sure enough I have hair.

Must be a driver issue I guess. But the odd thing is, everyone else still had hair. I’m the only one that went bald on my laptop.

Important Storyline

[EVE Online] Every 16 missions or so, a contact will call you for an Important Storyline mission. Yes, that is what they are called. Anyway, they give you a bit of story, sometimes have a chain of missions, and are a nice break from repetitive missions. Yesterday, three out of four missions were “stop the Serpentis pirates who are harassing people nearby.” When I logged on today, I was excited to see a message from my usual Storyline contact. Hurray! What excitement am I doing for the Gallente Navy? Last time, I had to face waves of Caldari attackers to stop a double agent.

Important Personnel Transportation
Mission briefing
I have something important for you this time. One of our chief janitors has just started his vacation, and requested that I find a suitable pilot to transport him to Grinacanne I – Federal Intelligence Office Assembly Plant, where he’ll be visiting his aunt for a couple weeks. Since you’re looking for work, I thought I’d offer you this job. What do you say?

This mission expires at 2005.07.21 00:22:47
This is an important mission, which will have significant impact on your faction standings.

Excuse me? You want me to use a warship as a personal transport vehicle for a janitor? And I need to put down a 50,000 credit deposit on him. You know, just in case I try to sell him a few stations over. Good janitors are hard to come by.

It really did affect my faction ratings, too, 10x as much as my previous mission. Which involved dealing with enemies of the Federation. I dropped in faction with other empires, who apparently are really bitter about this janitor’s getting to take a vacation. (Random reference: the gardener who Prine Xizor tries to hire away from the Emperor in Shadows of the Empire. Poor guy.) This must be some Very Important Janitor. Maybe he will be the next Amarr emperor. If he doesn’t show up in future missions, I am going to quit. :p
