War Off. War On. War Off?

EVE[EVE Online] The cease fire is off. War is on again, with FIX claiming SA is at fault and SA claiming FIX is at fault. It’s hard for your average peon like me to really come to grips with what went down.

Now it looks like FIX is going to get more help and fight back. Sometimes I really like this aspect of EVE and yet other times it disgusts me to no end. Adults acting like children and children acting like adults. Who is telling the truth? Who isn’t? The politicians are gathering for a summit to see if peace can be worked out. In the meantime, we are on high alert for hostilities. I am avoiding all possible combat situations until we get an official word.

City of Casual Players

coh[City of Heroes] Lum has some good thoughts about casual vs. raid content in WoW. I have some scattered comments from a City of Heroes/Villains player’s perspective.

By that dichotomy, we are all casual here. Every last one of us. Even the most hardcore player is not going to do many raids in City of Heroes. Why? We have one raid. One. His name is Hamidon, and we know the exact way we are allowed to defeat him. We know this to be the only way because all other options were nerfed within a week of being successful. Our one raid requires at least 60 people to have much chance of success. As such, no guild can monopolize it or even do it alone. Also, everyone who shows up gets a reward, so there is no reason to exclude anyone who will not get us all killed.

Cease Fire

EVE[EVE Online] It looks like the “big” war is over. A cease fire has been arranged between SA (Stain- Alliance) and FIX (Firmus Ixion). My corp is part of the HUZZAH Federation and we had been allied to SA in the war against FIX.

It appears that FIX feels that the battle for FAT has been lost and that SA has won. Both SA and FIX have reached an accord that calls for FIX pilots to withdraw back to Querious and for SA & allied forces to take full control of Catch and leave Querious. Full negotiations will continue.

A ceasefire is presently in effect as of this moment.

The “small” war between HUZZAH and Exile still continues.

My tackler training is underway. A tackler is a ship that is set up to keep the enemy ship stuck, or unable to warp away.

Live Event: AQ

wow[World of Warcraft] Today was my server’s (Mannoroth) day for the gates of AQ (Ahn’Qiraj) to open. Unfortunately, I was on the road today, had to pick up my brother, and forgot that my local time zone is not the same as my server’s time zone, so I missed the opening of AQ by a few minutes. Regardless, I got to run around the area and have a little fun.

Back To War

EVE[EVE Online] I left our alliance station in 0.0 space to make the long trip back out to empire. I was flying my Rifter, loaded up with lots of go-fast parts and warp core stabilizers to try to avoid any gate campers along the way.

Not having a lot of people on at the time, I decided to fly it solo without the benefit of a scout. Luckily, the 23 jump trip was uneventful. I then decided to fly another 20+ hops in empire space out to our corporation’s HQ. This trip was safe as there is no war declarations on us. Or should I say was…

Exile has declared war against HUZZAH once again, so starting tonight we will not be safe in empire space. Oh well, at least I got my jump clone set up now. I will attempt to find me some pvp action this time around.

Unfortunately for Exile, they stirred up a bit of a hornets nest this time as they “claimed” ownership of the Misaba system (Update: Exile is denying this) and that pissed off the Curatores Veritatis Alliance. Therefore, the CVA has returned the favor by declaring war on Exile. There are rumors of even more war declarations against Exile forthcoming.

Should be fun.

CCP Cracks The Whip

EVE[EVE Online] CCP just posted a new devBlog and it comes down really hard on cheaters. It appears to even say they are going to go after people that cheated in the past. Mostly it concerns the act of buying/selling ISK via an auction site such as ebay.

I really like what they have to say and I hope it’s not just all smoke and mirrors, which is what I’ve come to expect from previous games attempts to stop such deals. I’ll attach the devBlog below, for those that cannot find it on the main site:

Life in 0.0

EVE[EVE Online] I took a little trip into 0.0 space. 23 jumps inside 0.0 space to be exact. In all reality, it was a boring trip. Not a single shot was fired.

Thanks to a an escort from my buddy Mathir, and pretty much everyone doing something else, we were able to finally get that BPO delivered to our station. Now I’m kind of stuck there until we get a bit of a convoy back out. I saved a jumpclone so I can come back later to do some PvP.

It’s not all boring out here though, oh no. Check out this little map screen capture from a battle our alliance was involved in tonight. Reports appear to be in our favor, but what a battle it must have been for both sides.

From our corporation press release: “Ars Caelestis pilot Achilles Thorongmor personally assisted in a mammoth twenty two kills, over half of which were Battleship kills.”

Wish I was there.

P.S. New video card! About time I moved up from that 9700pro.

War Changes You

EVE[EVE Online] I recently accepted the offer from my new corporation, which put me at war. The alliance we belong to had another corporation declare war upon us. This allows them to attack us anywhere in the game, even in Empire (normally pretty safe). Concord will not intervene. The only safe spots are when you are docked in a station.

Being 30 jumps away from our 0.0 station, I decided I should fly out there to save a jumpclone. The process to fly from one place to another used to be as simple as setting the destination and clicking the autopilot button. Now, I need to be on the alert all the time.

Learning Skills

EVE[EVE Online] One of the things EVE Online is known for is skill training in real time. That is, you click the start button, and the skill trains. It takes a certain amount of time, whether you are online or not, and then you get the skill level when that time is up. Pretty simple.

About the only way to make this go faster is to improve your attributes (Perception, Intelligence, etc.), either through the Learning skill set or by buying valuable cybernetic implants. Conversely, the only thing those attributes do is cut skill training times.

As a player, you face a simple choice: learn Learning skills or go for directly useful ones. You must play for a long period of time for the time spent on the Learning skills to pay itself back, but the best time to train those skills is from day one, before you really know whether you want to play EVE. This must have interesting effects on player retention, and I presume that someone at CCP has done the math.
