Interview: Istvaan Shogaatsu

EVE[EVE Online] Istvaan Shogaatsu and his Corporation, “Guiding Hand Social Club” recently made waves in EVE for infiltrating yet another Corporation (under contract), making off with over 30 billion ISK worth of items and in-game cash, pod-killing their CEO and stealing a super rare ship. I managed to catch up with the man behind the mega-theft and he politely granted me an interview. Here it is:

Ethic: Lets start out with the latest big news out of the Guiding Hand Social Club (GH-SC). You had an assignment to, as you put it, “utterly demolish Mirial and bring all who followed her to their knees in one fell swoop”. Mirial was the CEO of Ubiqua Seraph corporation. I think everyone can agree that you certainly did what you had been hired to do.

Has there been any negative fallout for you from completing that assignment? From players? From CCP (the company that makes EVE Online)?

Istvaan Shogaatsu: No less than nine threats upon my life immediately after the major heist, delivered chiefly through email, arriving from hotmails or anon remailers. A GM also complained that our action has flooded them with petitions, but this was mostly in good fun on their part.

A Tale of Two Games

coh[City of Heroes] Buckle in, this is going to be a long one. Let us start with the digression immediately so it does not distract us later.

Many have observed that World of Warcraft is a different game at high and low levels. At low levels, things move quickly, you can solo easily, you gain new abilities all the time, and there are more quests than you can complete. It is a lot like City of Heroes. At high levels, it is Everquest. You spend a lot of time waiting/organizing large groups for instanced raids, during which several people will get to roll for a chance at a piece of improved loot.

City of Heroes faces a rather different dichotomy between high and low levels.

The Covert Operation

EVE[EVE Online] Part of what pulled me towards playing EVE was a few incidents that occurred in the game. One involved something on the line of tricking many investors into handing over money for nothing and the other involved gaining the trust of a few key people only to betray them. It was quite intriguing to me. Many people would call this griefing or cheating. The developers of EVE seemed to have allowed it to happen and by doing so perhaps even encouraged more such behavior.

Don’t they care about the people that might quit because of losing everything? Or are they counting on gaining more people than they lost because of the publicity? To me, this is a fascinating subject. Certainly, EVE is doing better than it used to, could it be because of these events? They got quite a bit of attention from them.

What Happens If You Nerf Everything?

coh[City of Heroes] Cryptic has announced an interesting change to City of Heroes enhancements. After the second, each enhancement of the same type will give less bonus.

Some brief background for those who have not played: each power in City of Heroes gets enhancement slots. You can fill these to improve various aspects of a power, such as its accuracy, damage, endurance cost, range, etc. Damage is king, so most damage powers get fully slotted with damage, or else one accuracy and the rest in damage. If you are a defensive class, you throw most of your slots into damage resistance or defense.

The obvious effect is to reduce damage, damage resistance, and defense. It will also reduce the top speed of all travel powers, eliminate perma-Hasten (all your powers come back faster), and reduce the endurance recovery of most heroes (6-slotted Stamina is pretty standard). Oh and heals, those will be weaker, too.

City of Villains Pricing

coh[City of Heroes] You’ve probably heard by now, since word gits ‘roun’ this har intar-net pretty durned fast, but the same monthly fee will let you play City of Heroes and City of Villains. If you have bought both boxes, $15/month pays for both. You get 12 characters per server instead of 8, to be shared between heroes and villains. It’s a new game – it’s a big expansing pack! It’s a floor wax – it’s a dessert topping!

So if you were thinking of trying COH again, when the new game comes out, your free month will cover both games. Remember, you want to upgrade your existing NCSoft account, not start a new one.

WTF is Limbus?

FFXI[Final Fantasy XI] SE is introducing something called Limbus, specifically Limbus: “Temenos” and “Apollyon.” The description sound like it will be a Dynamis style event, which are huge 64 person groups that fight a zone full of monsters. There was very little detail and nothing given on the developers page. There is alot of speculation though, as it appears that the area this might take place in would be in “Sea” the high level CoP mission areas. So far we know that Temenos means the area of and around a religious place and Apollyon is a greek term used basically to describe destruction. Also the term Limbus implies Limbo and all its attendant vagueness.

The Road Forks.

FFXI[Final Fantasy XI] Well, I have completed and helped my static complete Chapter 2 of the Chains of Promathia. We are now working on The Road Forks. This is a quest that has a semi-branching story line and doesn’t have to be completed in order (even though it usually is because the story lines take place in San d’Oria and Windurst respectively). For the San d’Orian story line we had to defeat a relatively simple Marlboro-type mob then return to San d’Oria to complete the mission. For the Windurst branch we had to go to Attohwa Chasm and defeat a pretty simple named Antlion mob. The problem with this part is that we then had to go up the Parrademo Tor, which is a big mountain that we had to climb to finish the quest. It has these cliffs you have to walk along that you can easily fall off of and the path is often times blocked by gas escaping from fissures in the wall.

Anyway, I have now completed the hard parts of both of the quests and just need to talk to the NPC’s to finish the quest. Which is nice. Except the fact that I have to do it again for the rest of my CoP static.

Green Chicken

wow[World of Warcraft] Ah, the big four oh. That’s the number 40 for those who are not stupid enough to comprehend me. That’s also the level I just reached on my second character in WoW. That means I get a mount, baby. Yeah!

As I hit 40 and vendored some items from grinding and questing beforehand, I lacked 9 silver to get my mount. My brother lent me some money so I’d have enough to buy it and put stuff up on the AH, but he’s poor as well since he just bought his ram. Needless to say, I’ve only bought two of my level 40 abilities and probably still have about 10g worth of abilities to buy. I have some farming to do. It was a lot easier for my Shaman to get money for my mount and still have some left over for abilities.

Anywho, this is my second mount that only has two legs! Say “hello!” to Mr. Green Chicken! (I had to wave for him, he has no arms. Poor guy.)

In other news, I’ve killed my fair share of rats, what about you?

Another Day In The ‘Verse

[EVE Online] I took some time off from my job search. It seems most corporations out here have odd work hours and they don’t much jive with my sleep hours. So I need to find a few corporations that operate when I do.

In the meantime, I found I nice deal on an Osprey just a few jumps away from my current home station. I placed the order and jumped in a shuttle. I picked up the Osprey and promptly named it “Rock Tumbler”. The Osprey is a good ship for mining.

I needed to order a few parts for the ship, namely a few good mining lasers. I found a deal for 4 of them in Jita, which was 6 jumps away, so I insured the Osprey and off I went.
