If I Had A Million Infamy

I made my first million Infamy last night. I remember my Heroes getting a million Influence back in the day. They were mid-20’s, had been miserly about enhancements, and even zoned out of missions a few times to sell so I wouldn’t miss any drops. And I needed that million so I could burn it on their first sets of SO’s. Without them, I was roadkill. Scrimp, save…it’ll be worth it.

My Mastermind dinged 16 late last night. And he made his million from just two drops. L’il bit different.

Service Restored

coh[City of Heroes] I have previously complained about bugs and customer service waiting times in City of Heroes/Villains. I have had no significant issues since my return. Issue 9 had no game-breaking bugs, and what bugs there are are mostly contained within the new things (although the “fix” for perma-stealth with rescues/kidnappings is keeping me out of Warburg). Oz and others have commented on how lovely customer service has been.

I suspect these two issues are related. The more bugs there are, the more customer service needs to do, the less time it has. You will not have a 90 minute wait if the help queue is three people deep. I usually fear playing after a new Issue, but the game seems to be working rather well.

I have not had any problems with Comcast either. My internet connection has been stable for months. This is good, since the only thing that had been delaying my switch was AT&T DSL’s problem recognizing my condo’s address.

Oh, Hello Again Officer…

Last night’s CoV adventure was plagued with system issues and hiccups, to the point that I was apologizing for monopolizing the GM’s time in my petitions. It was as I saw the floating police lights appear in front of me for the third time that night that I realized how very far we’ve come in the customer satisfaction arena.

Da Most Int’restin Sellin’ Place in the Woild

For last night’s adventure, I decided to take a trip the the university and then the black market. As my little Mastermind was but 7th, this was an interesting trip. Still, I survived and made it to CoV’s auction house, which should really be called cBay (with the good guy version called hBay, of course). Silly copyright restrictions.

Hey Youse Guys

After taking Zubon up on his offer for the trial run on CoH/CoV and reactivating my old account there, I decided I would give the dark side a try. With only 10 days to play with, and my limited play time, I probably should have waited for my upcoming mini vacation, but I wasn’t thinking clearly.

After going through assorted hurdles to log in (i.e. I forgot my password and login), I created my first Villian. I was disappointed but not entirely surprised to see they mostly sounded similar to the archetypes on the Hero side. However, I saw one that interested me, that was different from anything I’d played in CoH before – the Mastermind. After ensuring I had my pinky finger properly placed at the edge of my mouth, I began playing with the still-unmatched character creation screens.

CoX 10 Day Trials

coh[City of Heroes] Any player can now invite others to City of Heroes/Villains and send them a code for a 10-day free trial. This is some sort of referral program, so I presumably get free time if I lure you folks to subscribe. At any rate, if you want me to have Cryptic send you a trial code, drop me an e-mail. It should be good for both Heroes and Villains, so you can try them both.

Odds on the first player to hit level 50 during a 10-day trial?

Breakthrough

coh[City of Heroes] Issue 9 is live, with the Invention system, CoX’s answer to loot. I worry about that, since one of the things I liked about CoX was the lack of loot (and need to worry about it), and now I assume that some things will be rebalanced with the expectation of players using Invented stuff.

I was planning to resubscribe tonight, but that was before I saw the new Issue. I am not sure that I want to suggest to their data-mining that I came back because I really wanted loot in CoX, so I am here bright and happy one Day One of its existence. Conveniently, it looks like the game will be updating for at least an hour, so I don’t need to worry about that tonight. The download continues…

Excellent Thread

coh[City of Heroes] Over at the City of Heroes boards, there is a great thread about the story of the game. It includes critiques of the story line and its development (or lack thereof), analysis of game zones, tracing story lines over many levels and across villain groups, a chronology of City of Heroes/Villains history, discussions of different theories of villainy, comparisons of real world dictatorships, alternate visions of possible Cities of Villains, suggestions for how the storyline could develop, and thoughts about the game development process. Many of the commenters show significant sophistication about game and story development along with awareness of its limitations. It includes recognition of what the game’s story does well and where it could stand to be improved.

There are also some of the other things you expect from message board threads, but the quality is remarkably high. There are ideas here that could be used. Normally, a thread with >200 replies reads like a train wreck, but has some very good stuff. If you have a fair amount of time on your hands, give it a read through. There are several discussions and lines of thought running through it, and some of the good ones pick up late in the thread.
