BC Release Date (Mostly) Set – Jan 07

wow[World of Warcraft] Assuming you play the game, you probably already know this, but release date is set for sometime in January. I’m happy to be proven wrong in my assumption that they would go for the money. Assuming EBgames server ever comes back online, I’ll even buy a copy now. For those who can’t wait, there will be a 1.13 patch giving some of the BC content early, which should hold a few of the less-ravenous over. The guilds who had planned for a Nov release (such as some I read who had taken 3 weeks off at release time *boggle) probably aren’t pleased.

Speaking as a gamer though, I’d rather wait for a finished product. Official press release after the cut, should you desire.

Ryzom Revisited

sor[Ryzom] Once upon a time, I was in the Beta 2 of Ryzom. I tested and played. I really did not like the game much and put it out of my memory. When the announcement was made about the Ryzom Ring, I became interested again but was skeptical. Now that it is out, and after reading a lot about the game from Kwip, I decided to download the free trial and check it out for myself.

This post is mostly just an introduction and first impressions. I plan to post more down the road as I get more playtime in. But for now, let’s get started. The demo download took about an hour to grab off their website and get installed. There was also a small patch, about a minute’s worth. Registration was easy, no credit card required. All and all quite painless. The graphics displayed during the install showed scenes of space as well as fantasy. Hard to even know for sure what the game is going to be like from those shots.

CoX Holiday Event: Trick or Treat

coh[City of Heroes] The Platonic ideal of the grind has nearly been perfected: once a minute, you click on a door; enemies run out; you beat them up; repeat until you get a badge.

Trick or treating is cute, with some nice little rewards, and it is fun … for a while. I respect the direct implementation of “push the button to get a pellet.”

Uber – Not Just For Raiding Anymore

Or, “Mudflation – Now in Strawberry Flavor”

I should preface by saying I raid in WoW 2-5 times a week, and raided in EQ for far too many years. That’s to defuse the inevitable “u don’t know raiding!!1!!” comments I’ll see emailed to me, in between the mortgage refinance spam. It’s been fun to see my gear scale up from AH Bargain Bin, to mostly blue, to purple. And of course the power gain is handy. My solo ability has gone from adequate to quite fine, and I no longer have the endurance of a wet napkin. Having the ol’ mana bar last longer always helps too. That’s the primary carrot of raiding – new, more powerful items and gear you can’t get elsewhere.

That is, until that scantily dressed harlot known as Miss BC swings by.

Developer advises: Don’t listen to developers

David Noonan comments:

That’s the curse of being a game designer—you see so many versions of things that sometimes you can’t remember which things actually see print, in which books, and under which names. If a game designer answers a rules question of the top of his or her head, be a little suspicious. Those heads are crammed with previous versions, playtest versions, and Versions That Should Not Be.

This makes sense to me. At work, once a project is inexorably out of my hands, I sometimes flush it from my mind so that I do not worry about what changes six people down the line are going to make; if I am asked for input later, I can recycle those synapses. Other times, I am the mental archivist who explains that we did that project two years ago under another name, or we changed it half-way through and they are thinking of the old version, or we have yet update the documentation to reflect reality, or…

When you hear a dev make an off-hand comment, he may be thinking of any version of the game starting in pre-beta up through things on internal test, planned for the future, or designed and then scrapped. They may have a different internal name for whatever it is or use some hodgepodge of technical meanings. Really, they are trying to give you the right answer, but you may want to double-check in a more structured environment.

Pin The Tail On The Date

What’s the most popular MMORPG activity around besides guessing if that mostly naked elf you’re dancing with is really female (hint: no) that everyone is doing? Guessing the release date for Blizzard’s expansion! This is a fun for all ages kind of show, and has the user base in a Furor. Ha! I made a silly in-joke there, you can tell I haven’t had my morning Dew yet, can’t you?

Anyway, if you peruse the beta forms, and you’re welcome to do so since they are not secured, you’ll see posts ranging from “Almost ready!” to “Um…so where’s my content?” That hasn’t stopped retailers from selling it. My favorite has been EBGames, who originally estimated the release for March 27, 2006 (this was shortly after BlizCon) and has continued to slide the date slowly south. Out of morbid curiosity, I went a-wandering the web and found some dates the sellers are currently shucking.

Farming…again and again and again and again and again

Ok, I haven’t posted much lately (for lots of good reasons, none of which I will bore you with here), but after reading Ethic’s recent post on farm status I couldn’t resist opining a bit.

Several of the comments posted on his topic seemed to confuse the differences between repeating the same quest/mission/instance over and over to obtain a piece of loot with the satisfaction of repeating a quest for the thrill of achievement or the sheer fun of adventure, or even the replayability of games like Tetris or Minesweeper, where the gameplay is repetitive (then again, it is the same for Chess and Monopoly, isn’t it?).
